Released in November 2005, Mourning Sun is the fourth studio album by Fields of the Nephilim. While vocalist Carl McCoy announced the reunion of the original lineup in 1998 (and collaborated with bass player Tony Pettit on songs that were released on the compilation album Fallen in 2002), he is the only remaining original band member to be featured on the album.
After Jungle Records had released Fallen against McCoy's wishes, he parted ways with both the label and his long-time collaborator, Pettit. McCoy would spend eighteen months recording new demos in his mobile recording studio, dubbed "The Ice Cage", which he would take with him into various places, including Norway. According to McCoy, The Ice Cage sessions generated enough material for a double album, yet it was ultimately decided to narrow the track listing down to one disc.
While McCoy has acknowledged that additional musicians were recruited for the recording process, he has not disclosed their identities or admitted whether they are included in the band's touring lineup.
