Beware of Mountaintop Motel, for inside its creaky halls, dwells Evelyn, a sweet old woman fresh out of an insane asylum. Stay away, for she has just gotten rid of her daughter, permanently, and is starting to hear voices, or come on down during the darkest of nights, and join her other unfortunate guests, druken preacherman, carpenter, a pair of newlyweds, a failed salesman, and two nubile, singer wannabes. But don't be surprised if your room is filled with rats or snakes, or even if you witness a death or two, or three, it's just Evelyn's way of saying hello(and goodbye) to her guests. So come on down and join in Evelyn's Mountaintop Motel Massacre, if you dare...
[edit] Plot Summary
The films opens to a creepy music theme, and we see a black and white picture of an older woman, Evelyn(Anna Chappell), in a straightjacket, and the date that she has been released. Flash to Evelyn, now out of the insane asylum, planting seeds in the garden behind her motel, named Mountaintop Motel. Her daughter, Lori(Jill King) is inside the motel, playing with her animals and tying nooses around their necks. She goes down into what seems to be an underground tunneling system under the motel, and sets the animals down with her toys around a small table. There is a picture of her father, and she begins to have a seance, trying to communicate with him, telling him that Mama is hearing voices again. Evelyn meanwhile spots a gerbil in her cabbage patch and calls for Lori to come get it, but Lori can't hear her and doesn't come out. So, Evelyn takes her scicle and chops the gerbil up into pieces, and goes to find her daughter. Evelyn goes into the motel, still carrying the bloody scicle and begins to call for Lori, eventually going down into the tunnels. She finds Lori trying to speak to her deceased father, and begins screaming at her, smashing things and destroying everything at the table, by swinging the scicle around. But during her crazy antics, Evelyn accidentally hits Lori in the throat with the scicle, killing her! Evelyn then starts to break down and calls the police telling them that Lori died in a gardening accident. The sheriff(James Bradford) believes her, and a funeral takes place, where Evelyn starts to hear voices accusing her of killing her daughter, showing that she may be still insane. She goes back to the motel and books a room for the friendly, but alcoholic preacher, Reverend Bill McWiley(Bill Thurman), and then lies down to rest, hearing her daughter's voice all through her dreams.
We are then introduced to the other characters who are each driving along different roads, sensing an approaching storm, Tanya(Virginia Loridans) and her cousin, Prissy(Amy Hill) are driving in their red slugbug, singing country songs after seeing a concert, Vernon(Gregg Brazzel) and his newlywed wife, Mary(Marian Jones), are driving in their truck trying to decide where to stay at for their honeymoon, Al(Will Mitchel), a sleazy salesman, is trying to settle a deal with his agent and the company he's trying to sell his product to, and Crenshaw(Major Brock), the carpenter, is trying to find a place to stay and relax for a bit. Crenshaw gets to the motel first, and asks for a room, witnessing a frazzled Evelyn, and getting a room next to the preacher. Him and the preacher become good friends and after they talk for awhile, the preacher goes to take a nap. Night falls, and Evelyn begins to hear her daughter's voice and goes into her room, and begins to take all the animals out of their cages and jars. She finds a jar of cockroaches and empties them into a bag, and then finds a container of mice, which she empties into another bag.
The storm is approaching, as well as nightfall, and Vernon and Mary decide to find a room, they spot the Mountaintop Motel and drive up the only road to get to it. Once they arrive, the wife sees the rundown place and asks if they can find somewhere else, but Vernon doesn't have enough money to spend at some fancy hotel. So he goes in to get a room, as the rain begins to pour down. Evelyn is there, and he tells her that him and his wife are newlyweds, and Evelyn states that she has a surprise for his wife. The couple get a room and drive their car over to the cabin number that they have, just as the storm starts to get worse. Evelyn then climbs down into the tunnel system, and open the hatch in the preacher's room, putting the bag full of mice inside, and then goes to Crenshaw's, and puts the bag full of cockroaches in his room, giggling like a schoolgirl along the way. She then finds a container of snakes, and fills a bag with them, and puts it into the newlyweds' room, watching as the rattlesnake and a black snake slither under the bed.
Meanwhile, Tanya and Prissy's car has broken down, leaving them in the rain with white shirts and no bras. Al comes along, and upon seeing them, stops to give them a lift, hoping to score with them. They see that he has a phone in his car and ask if he's a manager of a singing company, and he lies, and agrees telling them that he works with country singers in Nashville. The two girls then begin to ponder if they can get a singing gig with him, and he agrees, and takes them to the Mountaintop Motel. While on the way, a streak of lightning hits a tree and almost crushes them, but they hurriedly pass, and the tree falls behind them, blocking the only road out of the motel. They arrive and get a room, noticing that Evelyn looks a little spooky and has cobwebs in her hair. They then go to their room, right next to the newlyweds, who are about to have sex. Vernon is laying in the bed, and hasn't noticed the rattlesnake climb up onto the bed table right next to him, and as he bends to shut the light off, the snake strikes him in the cheek. He then smashes the snake, while Mary screams her head off. The preacher awakes, to find that their are mice in the room, and begins to kick at them, scaring them away and out the door. Evelyn pokes her head up into Crenshaw's room and watches as he begins to realize that there are cockroaches all around him, and he kills them all, saying that he's in a roach motel. Al meanwhile gives Tanya and Prissy a new pair of clothes, consisting of button up shirts and new socks, and has them sing for him, saying that he can get them a record deal, but only if they sleep with him. Tanya is for the idea, but Prissy knowing all along that he was just some sleazebag refuses, going into the bathroom. Tanya goes in after her and begs her to do it for their sake of becoming famous, but Prissy still refuses, kicking Tanya out and locking the door. Evelyn however, is in her room, and hears her daughter's voice telling her to kill everyone at the motel, because they will send her back to the hospital, and she picks up the scicle, slathers on makeup, until she looks like Bette Davis, and ventures down into the tunnels. Mary runs out to Al's room and asks if he can call the police, because her husband was bitten by a rattlesnake. He goes to his car and calls the doctor, who informs him that he can't leave, because the storm is too bad, so he goes and tells Mary, who is inside her room with Vernon, who's cheek is now the size of a golfball. Prissy is in the bathroom, when Evelyn pops up from under the floor, but doesn't notice her there, until she looks in the mirror. She turns around to scream, but Evelyn hits her in the face and throat with the scicle, splitting her face and jugular open, and dragging her body down underneath the floor.
Al comes back and him and Tanya begin to makeout, but Tanya stops to see if Prissy is still sure on not joining, but she won't answer. So Al breaks down the door and finds blood on the mirror and floor, but no trace of Prissy. Tanya begins screaming and Al goes out to tell the others, he informs the newlyweds about the missing girl and the preacher, and gets Crenshaw to come with him to the room. The preacher decides to go get Evelyn, when he hears something behind him, turning around, he sees her with the scicle and she calls him an angel of death, and hits him in the stomach with the scicle, killing him, and dragging him down under the floor. Crenshaw and Al come back to the motel room, and try to find out what happened, while Tanya begins to cry and go insane, then the power goes out, making Tanya scream, and everyone else light candles. They discover a door under the bathroom rug and look inside, seeing a underground passageway, in which someone can climb up through. Crenshaw goes back to his room to get a hammer and nails, and uses the restroom, just as Evelyn begins to climb up into the room. Crenshaw quickly hammers the door shut and goes to tell the preacher to be careful, but he doesn't answer. Meanwhile, Al goes to tell the newlyweds to be careful since there is someone trying to kill them all. After he leaves, he tells Mary not to let anyone in the room unless they knock three times, and she closes the door and locks it, just as Evelyn approaches from the shadows with the scicle. Vernon is getting extremely woozy and can't see to well, and doesn't notice Evelyn either. Mary turns around and has the scicle embedded into her cheeks, and screams only to be hit with the scicle, Vernon sees this and tries to move but is too sick and begins to scream, only to have his throat slashed with the scicle. Crenshaw informs Al of Evelyn, and they hear the screams, breaking down the door, and finding the dead bodies, but no sign of Evelyn. They remember Tanya and rush over to Al's room. Tanya is alone in the room and doesn't notice Evelyn pop up in the bathroom, Al and Crenshaw rush in, and slam the door shut, as Evelyn begins to slam the scicle into the door over and over, eventually stopping and going down into the tunnels. Crenshaw decides to go under, and tells Al to hammer the door shut behind him, so he does. Then he goes out to his car and calls the police, telling them to get over to the motel immediately, and tells Tanya to stay in the room as he goes under to help Crenshaw. Now alone, Tanya panicks and runs outside into the storm, running through treebranches and mud to hide from Evelyn who could or could not be outside with her. So she runs and hides in Al's car, crouching in the backseat to wait for him to return.
Under the ground, Al and Crenshaw are split up, Crenshaw has a hammer, and Al has a flashlight. Evelyn has a candle and the scicle and begins to create a wild goose chase for Crenshaw and Al. Crenshaw drops his hammer, and goes to get it, not knowing that Evelyn is on the other side of the wall, and cuts his hand off with the scicle! Crenshaw screams and is hit in the head with the scicle, dying instantly. The sheriff finally arrives down by the tree, and begins to walk all the way up to the motel, carrying his gun and a flashligt. Tanya begins to scream for Al, opening the door and screaming for him to come back up with her. Al is under the ground looking for Evelyn and sees her duck into another room and hide, so he begins to look for her and Crenshaw, but is attacked by Evelyn, who makes him hit his head and fall unconscious. The sheriff finally reaches the motel and Tanya, thinking it's Evelyn hides further down in the car, but once she realizes it's a sheriff, hurriedly comes rushing out, telling him to find Al, and kill Evelyn. He grabs her and asks what's going on and she tells him Al went after Eveyln under the motel, so he tells her to get back in the car, which she does. He then climbs down into one of the open doors, and sees a table with Prissy and the preacher's dead bodies sitting in the chairs around it. He finds Al, and quickly awakens him and tells him to get above ground and that he'll find her, so Al goes to climb out. Then the sheriff begins to play cat and mouse with Evelyn who eventually attacks him, causing him to lose his gun, and they struggle, bumping into the support bars that hold the whole tunnel system up. The tunnel begins to collapse and Evelyn swings the scicle up to hit the sheriff, only to have one of the support beams swing off and cause her to hit herself in the throat with the scicle! The sheriff goes up to her, and she grabs him, before she dies, and he quickly climbs up to floor level as the tunnels all collapse.
It is now morning, and the sheriff guides Al and a shaken, half-crazy Tanya down to his car to leave the motel, and as they climb in, the ghost of Lori appears, and runs off into the woods, free of Mountaintop Motel.

The original title was supposed to be, Moutaintop Motel, but New World Pictures added Massacre to sell more copies.
This film was one of the "50 First Dates" star, Amy Hill's first movies
