[edit] Athletics

The Mountain Lakes High School Lakers compete in the Colonial Hills Conference which includes public and parochial high schools covering Essex and Morris counties in west central New Jersey, under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

The school was recognized as the Group I winner of the NJSIAA ShopRite Cup in 2005-06. The award recognized the school for achieving 1st in Girls Cross Country, a tie for 3rd Field Hockey, a tie for 3rd Girls Swimming, 1st in Boys Swimming, a tie for 3rd in Girls Basketball, 2nd in Boys Golf and 1st in Boys Lacrosse.[6]

Mountain Lakes High School is well known for its athletic program as well. Its two major sports are lacrosse and football. In 2006, the lacrosse team made it to the state finals. The 2007 boys lacrosse team won the NJSIAA Group I State Championship with an 8-6 win over Madison High School.[7] The team moved on to win the Tournament of Champions, defeating Hunterdon Central Regional High School 9-5 in the semifinals, and took the ToC title with a 13-11 victory over Delbarton School, thereby, becoming state champions.[8]

The 2007 girls lacrosse team won their own North, Group I state sectional title, edging Chatham High School 14-13 in the tournament final.[9]

The football program, under long time head coach Doug Wilkins, is one of the winningest in the state. It's highlights include several state championships, including two undefeated state championship teams, in the 1970s. It has also recently regained its past glory: From the years 2000-2007 the teams record is 73-15, which includes a 23 game win streak from Thanksgiving 2001 until late November 2003. In 2002 the football program won a state title (North II, Group I) over arch rival Boonton 23-16 to cap a perfect (12-0) season. The football team came into the 2006 state tournament ranked sixth in their bracket, and proceeded to beat #3 seed Glen Rock High School 35-21 in the first round and seventh-ranked Cedar Grove High School by 14-9 in the semifinal game.[10] On December 1, 2006, Mountain Lakes fell to top-seeded Bogota High School 28-0 at Giants Stadium, in the North 1, Group I state championship game.[11] In October 2007 coach Wilkins won his 300th career game. Coach Wilkins has: won over 22 CHC titles, won 6 state titles, a streak of 20 consecutive seasons of making the NJSIAA playoffs, and has not had a losing season since 1984.

The boys swimming team won the 2007 North II - B state sectional championship with a 112-58 win over Chatham High School.[12] The team moved on to win the 2007 Group B State Championship, edging Haddonfield High School 86-84.[13]

In 2006, the girls basketball team won North I, Group I state sectional title, edging Pascack Hills High School 43-42 in the tournament final.[14][15]

The JV tennis team is also a top team in the Colonial Hills Conference.[citation needed]
