Mount Yatsugatake (八ヶ岳 Yatsugatake?), is a group of volcanic mountains located on the border of Nagano Prefecture and Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan. It has an elevation of 2,899 metres.

Mount Yatsugatake, literally Mountain with eight peaks, has several definitions. The first definifition, which may be the most common one, means the mountains from the Natsuzawa Pass to the end of the mountains. This group of mountains is called ‘Minami Yatugatake’, literally, ‘South Yatsutagate Mountains’. The second definition is the mountains from Mount Kitayokodake to the end of the Yatsugatake mountains, which includes ‘Minami Yatsugatake’ and ‘Kita Yatsugatake’ (the North Yatsugatake Mountains) together. The last definition is all of the Yatsugatake mountains including Mount Tateshina.

Mount Yatsugatake is a complex volcano, which was made by repeated volcanic activities in many thousands years. The last eruption was estimated from 600 to 800 years ago at Mount Kitayokodake of North Yatsugatake Mountains. The highest peak of the mountains is Mount Akadake and the elevation is 2,899 metres.

The two mountain groups of Yatsugatake, North and South, have different outlooks. Roughly, South Yatugatake Mountains are steep and having alpine outlooks. However, mountains belongings to North Yatsugatake Mountains are gentle and lower than the South Yatsugatake mountains. The highest peak of the south is Akadake, and that of the north is Mount Higashi Tengudake.

This mountain is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan. Please pay attention to that ‘Yatsugatake’ on the list means South Yatsugatake Mountains, and Mount Tateshina is also selected as one of them.

Mount Yatsugatake is located in the center of the mountain area of center of Honsyu, so the view from the top of the peaks is really great.
