Mount Frere

Mount Frere is a small town named after Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere. The town is located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, about 100 km north east of Mthatha where it is home to the Bhaca, Hlubi and Mpondo people, a division of the Xhosa, and is one of the most underdeveloped communities in South Africa. The most common surname is Makaula (the grandson of Madzikane ka-Zulu). The Makaulas own most of the land and are the royal family in power in the area. The area consists of many paramount villages, the most famous being Mpamba and Nkanunu.
