Mounds Mall was developed by Mel Simon & Associates (now Simon Property Group), opening in 1965. Original stores included Montgomery Ward; H. P. Wasson and Company; Hoyt, Wright & Co.; Woolworth; MCL Cafeterias; and a combined Kroger/SupeRx grocery store and pharmacy. After Wasson's closed, the store became Weiler's, then Meis, and then (currently) Elder-Beerman. The Montgomery Ward closed and was replaced by Sears. A later expansion added JCPenney, which was demolished in 2002 for the mall's movie theaters.
