Am I correct that the picture is drawn with a single optical encoder on each axis? I'm not really sure how that would work; you can get speed, but how do you get direction? It is possible to use a more complicated code on the wheels that would allow that, but that is not what is drawn. The howstuffworks page shows a mouse with a simple pattern like here, but two photosensors. That gives two signals (roughly) in quadrature, which allows you to determine the direction. The graphic is very nice though, very clear.
