The Motocross des Nations motocross race is an annual "team" event, where riders representing their country meet at what is billed as the "Olympics of Motocross". The event has been staged since 1947, where the team of Bill Nicholson, Fred Rist and Bob Ray, representing Great Britain, took home the Chamberlain Trophy for the first time.
The event as it stands today is an amalgamation of three separate events, the original Motocross des Nations, raced with 500cc motorcycles, the Trophée des Nations, raced with 250cc motorcycles, and the Coupe des Nations, for 125cc motorcycles. Before 1984, the three events were held in different locations on different weekends, whereafter they were combined into a single event with one rider per class.
The scoring for the event works on the position system, i.e. first place is awarded one point, second place two, etc. Each class (currently MX1, MX2 and Open) races twice, each time against one of other two classes, for a total of three races. The worst score of three races is dropped, and the lowest combined score wins.
The event's name has been officially anglicised (as Motocross of Nations "MXON") since 2004, when Youthstream was awarded promotional rights for the World Motocross Grand Prix, although the general moniker Des Nations or MXDN is still very much in use.
Historically Great Britain dominated the early years, before the competition became more fierce. With the rise of motocross in North America from the 1970s, the USA embarked on a famous winning streak, lasting 12 years from 1981 to 1993.

A replacement event was run on the same day at nearby Glen Helen in San Bernadino and an official replacement event was held a month later at Bellpuig in Spain, but it was poorly supported by teams. The race was won by the Italian team.

[edit] 2005 Event
The 2005 Motocross des Nations event was held at Ernée in France in September 2005. It heralded the return of the United States to the event after several on-off appearances after 9/11 and doubts that they would attend again in 2005. Pressure from several sports figures and the general sporting public ensured a return. The event was sold out and spectators were eventually turned away at the gates to avoid dangerous overcrowding. The race was noted for the spectacular racing between Ricky Carmichael and Ben Townley.
[edit] 2006 Event
In September 2006, Motocross des Nations was held at a purpose-built track at Matterley Basin near Winchester in the south of England, which had previously been used only for the Grand Prix of Great Britain in June the same year. On the Friday of the race weekend a massive downpour of rain appeared to ruin the weekend, however efforts by the track crew ensured that the race would run as expected. Hard work through the night and morning to restore the track paid off as the track was in near perfect condition come Saturday's practice sessions. Another downpour on Saturday night into Sunday morning made for perfect racing conditions on Sunday, as the event ran smoothly all day with clear skies and sun.
In the end it was Team USA who would take the win on points, resulting in a tie with Great Britain for the all time most MXDN wins. Despite not winning any of the individual races, the consistency of Team USA paid off.
