I made this since it was a requested article. I might add more later. You can play with the wordlist I used to generate this. Note, I edited the results a little, removing "l" (a form of "la") and "alicio" (the name "Alice"). --Pifactorial 19:49, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Interesting list, though the fact that you had to exclude "Alicio" rather indicates that the underlying texts may be a little limited! I wonder whether "arbaristo" (at #147) is a sign of the same problem, and should perhaps be excluded?
Also, I wonder if, as with Most common words in English, grammatical derivatives should be lumped in with the lemma—e.g. do si, sin, sia, sian, siaj and siajn really all need be listed separately, or would it be better to have just one entry (si) or maybe two (si, sia)? Admittedly that would take a lot more work, which may need to be done manually (attempting to automate it might end up treating ajn as the accusative plural of *a !) Vilĉjo 12:43, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I was going to try to create a separate list with just lemmas or roots, but I haven't had the time to create such a filter. Like you said, I think that would need to be thoroughly edited by hand to protect the particles. --Pifactorial 20:55, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Maybe there's a better corpus you can use? It looks like [1] is promising - my Esperanto still isn't great, so I'm not sure if you can actually download the corpus and use it for research yourself, but it'd be something to look into. Thanks for this list, though. Bamos 21:48, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! I'd already looked at that, but I'm yet to find a place where you can download. It seems like you can only search online (which doesn't make much sense to me). I'll try registering and investigate further. --π! 22:06, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
I guess you could use http://www.bertilow.com/tekstaro/ . Maybe you should contact Bertilo Wennegren to complete the job... --192.87.49.2 09:22, 9 February 2007 (UTC) (LaPingvino in the Esperanto-wikipedia)

[edit] Move to Wiktionary?

Does Wiktionary have word lists? What about articles such as Most common words in English? --Pifactorial 23:36, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a dictionary states that "an entry that consists of just a definition does not belong" and "Wikipedia articles that are mere dictionary definitions should be tagged {{Move to Wiktionary}}". But this article is not a mere definition, indeed it contains no definitions at all! By analogy with Most common words in English (and also de:Liste der häufigsten Wörter der deutschen Sprache), it seems OK as a Wikipedia article. Vilĉjo 12:23, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wiktionary

I don't mind the template being removed _after_ discussion has finished. Don't worry, it won't bite you. You should note that there are discussions however such as this as well as this. Wiktionary has a large number of lists such as Swadesh lists so I just want to make sure that we need this article here.

The other problem with this article of course, is that it is WP:NOR. That might be reason enough not to have it. If you like I'll ask Don Harlow if there have been any studies done on this already that we can reference. That might be all right. Mithridates 23:43, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, I don't think that simply presenting public-domain data in a new form (except to "advance a position") constitutes original research. Otherwise, half of the graphics on Wikipedia violate WP:NOR. As for any other objections you have - feel free to do with the article as you will. I just created it because there was a request for it, and I don't have any emotional investment in its wellbeing. --Pifactorial 23:58, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Of all possible objections to this article, WP:NOR strikes me as among the least plausible. But I don't mind what criteria are applied, so long as they are consistent. Are other word lists also going to be tagged for transwikification? Vilĉjo 00:51, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Okay, well let's leave it as is for now then. There's a bit of debate on whether lists should be allowed but since there are quite a few of them already we'll let others decide. I don't have any emotional investment in this either. Mithridates 02:28, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] English translations

Can anyone add the English translations? -- Dissident (Talk) 16:08, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Heresy! --π! 19:20, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
;) Maybe it'd be better to add them in the talk page? I don't know if they belong in the article. You can also play around with this translator. --π! 19:20, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
What's with the outburst? This is the English language Wikipedia after all. -- Dissident (Talk) 20:28, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
I think User:Pifactorial was being light-hearted (the smiley might have been a bit of a giveaway there.) Anyway, and FWIW, here is a version of the table with English translations. Feel free to do with it whatever you wish (including junking the whole thing …).
By way of comment, having the translations perhaps points up some of the peculiarities, which may have something to do with the restricted sample used for the analysis. #147 (arbaristo) is a definite oddity; and are Esperantists really so self-referential that the words lingvo (#60) and internacia (#197) figure in the top 200 words? (I'm also a little surprised that dio turns up as high as #81—higher, for example, than homo at #140.) Vilĉjo 23:46, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
"his/her/its/their (refl.) (acc. pl.)"
I think we now have conclusive proof that you have way too much time on your hands. Thanks for taking care of this, I completely forgot about it. --π! 22:56, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
