The term United Nations was being used by the Allies of World War II for their alliance before the treaty was signed formally creating the Charter based UN. See the introduction in Allies of World War II 'During December 1941, Roosevelt devised the name "United Nations" (UN) for the Allies, and the Declaration by United Nations, on 1 January 1942, was the basis of the modern UN (Douglas Brinkley, FDR & the Making of the U.N.).
