Mostly Autumn are a British band, producing music heavily influenced by progressive rock, most obviously Genesis and Pink Floyd, and folk music.

Mostly Autumn was formed in the late 1990's. Their original lineup (as listed on their first album) included Bryan Josh, Heather Findlay, Iain Jennings, Liam Davison, Bob Faulds, Stuart Carver, Kev Gibbons and Allan Scott (see the Members section for more details).

On their second album Allan Scott was replaced by Rob McNeil and for their third album (2001), he in turn has been replaced by Jonathan Blackmore, while Andy Smith replaced Stuart Carver on the Bass Guitar and Angela Goldthorpe joined to provide flute and backing vocals. In 2004, shortly before the band's 'V Shows' tour, Iain's brother, Andrew Jennings, took over on Drums and Percussion.

Iain Jennings left the band at the beginning of 2006 to pursue his own musical ambitions and has put together his own band, Breathing Space, as well as contributing to projects by other artists. Breathing Space have so far released two albums: Breathing Space (2005) and Coming Up For Air (2007).

Ben Matthews of Thunder stood in on keyboards for the band's headline gig at the Baja Prog Festival in Mexico in March 2006. Chris Johnson was then recruited as a permanent replacement, with Angela Gordon (formerly Goldthorpe) also taking a more prominent role on keyboards.

At the beginning of 2007 both Liam Davison and Andrew Jennings left the band, Liam to concentrate on his solo album and Andrew to devote his time to his other projects. Ex-Karnataka and Fish-drummer Gavin Griffiths stood in on drums for the early 2007 live shows, but the band decided not to replace Liam Davison, preferring to either adapt the songs as necessary or use Chris Johnson or Heather Findlay for additional guitar duties as appropriate. Andrew Jennings temporarily rejoined the group at the end of 2007, until Henry Bourne became his permanent replacement in 2008.

When Chris Johnson and Angela Gordon left in 2008, Iain Jennings and Liam Davison returned to the fold on keyboards and guitar respectively. Anne-Marie Helder, who has occasionally played support slots to the band in the past and who also filled in for Angela during her pregnancy, has taken over the role of flute, keyboards and backing vocals.

A new studio album, entitled Glass Shadows (now released through the band's website) and accompanying tour are set for spring 2008.

During 2005 Heather Findlay and Angela Gordon formed an acoustic side project called Odin Dragonfly. As such they have made several live appearances both as a support act and as headliners. In August 2007 they released their first album, entitled Offerings.

[edit] Trivia

  • One of the well-known Mostly Autumn album characteristics is that the first song of a new record tends to literally begin from where the last song of previous album left off. The final seconds of the preceding album's last song are audible at the beginning before a smooth fadeout. However, this tradition was broken for the subscribers' limited edition of the Heart Full Of Sky album, which has no carry-over from the previous album. Traditionalists will be happy to learn that this was restored for the single CD general release version where part of 'Tomorrow' (the final track from Storms Over Still Water) can be heard shortly after the start of the opening track 'Fading Colours'. In this case the fade-in of the previous album's final track isn't placed at the very beginning of 'Fading Colours' as it would have masked and conflicted with Heather Findlay's opening vocals.
  • Heather Findlay contributed to Arjen Lucassen's 'Ayreon' project on The Human Equation album in 2004, singing the part of 'Love'.
