Mosley Common

Mosley Common is a district of Boothstown in the Salford district of Greater Manchester. It is a border town, and the boundary of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan encroaches onto it.

Original name for the area was Hurst (old English for wood) Mosley Common means "clearing/wood on mossy ground", from Old English mos "moss" and leah "wood, clearing". The name was recorded as Moseleiah in 1039. The "Common" addition to the name refers to a common open space. Mosley Common also had a large input in the coal mining industry in the mid 1900s.
