Moses Cohen Henriques

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moses Cohen Henriques was a Jewish-Portuguese pirate who helped Piet Hein capture the Spanish treasure fleet in the battle of the bay of Matanzas.

Henriques helped plan one of history's largest heists against Spain. In 1628, he set sail with Dutch West India Co. Admiral Piet Hein, whose own hatred of Spain was fueled by four years spent as a galley slave aboard a Spanish ship. Henriques and Hein boarded Spanish ships off Cuba and seized shipments of New World gold and silver worth about 1 billion in today's dollars.

He then went on to lead the Jewish contingent in Brazil and established his own pirate island off the Brazilian coast. After the recapture of Brazil in 1654, Moses ended up as an advisor to Henry Morgan, the leading pirate of the time.
