[edit] In Blood Omen
Mortanius is born over five centuries before the start of Blood Omen, selected to guard the Death Pillar at the Pillars of Nosgoth. Eons ago, when the Pillars were under vampire control, Moebius the Timestreamer and Mortanius led a rebellion and established human guardians. Thirty years prior to the events of Blood Omen, the seal on the dimensional barrier which imprisoned the Hylden was gradually weakened without the Vampire Guardians to maintain the Pillars. This allowed the Hylden Lord to possess Mortanius and use him to kill Ariel, the Balance Guardian, thus driving her lover Nupraptor, the Mind Guardian, insane. This led to the rest of the Pillar guardians following suit, and the Pillars were corrupted further.
In Blood Omen, Mortanius sends assassins to kill the next Balance Guardian - the nobleman Kain - later using a relic known as the " Heart of Darkness" to revive Kain as a vampire. Mortanius then sends Kain to meet with Ariel's spectre and embark on a journey to kill the corrupted Pillar Guardians. The penultimate battle in Blood Omen takes place against Mortanius, whom Kain kills, and the concluding one is fought against the Dark Entity, a demon-like monster created out of Mortanius' corpse by the Hylden Lord who originally possessed the Necromancer.
[edit] In Defiance
In Legacy of Kain: Defiance, the wraith Raziel happens upon Mortanius at the head of a cult in the Avernus Catacombs during the timeline of Blood Omen. It turns out that the Necromancer was worshiping Raziel's vampire brother, Turel, drawn back through time by Azimuth the Planer. After killing Turel, Raziel speaks with Mortanius himself, who admits to having discovered from murals in the underground caverns that the Vampires are meant to guard the Pillars, and that his rebellion alongside Moebius against the Guardians was wrong. He thus revived Kain with the hope that the Scion of Balance would return the Pillars to the Vampires. At the end of this meeting, Mortanius is possessed by the Hylden Lord and, regaining control for a brief moment, teleports to the Pillars of Nosgoth to fight with the younger Kain, coinciding with his death in Blood Omen.
