Citing declining enrollment, Samuel Rogers Middle School and Latimer Elementary School have been closed, despite opposition from parents and students from both schools. All middle school students have been channeled to Castro Middle School, now renamed Moreland Middle School. A large portion of the students from Latimer were redirected to Gussie Baker Elementary School and George Payne Elementary School. Rogers Middle School now houses Easterbrook Discovery School, while the former EDS building is being rented out.. All of the aforementioned changes occurred during the summer of 2006.

[edit] Schools

Leroy Anderson Elementary School is a school in San Jose within the district. It was recently remodeled in 2005, and has 367 students. A K-5 Title 1 school, Anderson is situated in a community significantly different from its surrounding, affluent West San Jose neighborhoods. Fifty percent of Anderson's students are English Language Learners and seventy-two percent of the students qualify for free and/or reduced lunch.[2]

Moreland Middle School is a recently christened middle (6-8) school in the district.[3] In the summer of 2006, Samuel Rogers Middle School was shut down and the students were diverted to the Castro Middle School campus, now renamed Moreland Middle School. Samuel Rogers Middle School and Castro Middle School have always been "friendly" rivalries, competing against each other in sports. This school houses approximately 1,100 students daily in buildings built for 700 and about 20 portable classrooms. The mascot of MMS is a Mustang, and the school colors are gold and black. Moreland Middle School is the only school middle school in the district. There were 1,067 students in the 2007-2008 school year.[4] About 65% of the 8th graders at Moreland usually feed into Prospect High School and the rest attend Westmont High School and some are accepted into local private high schools.

Easterbrook Discovery School (EDS) is the only K-8 school in the district. It is located at the old Rogers Middle School location since 2006. Their mascot is the Husky. EDS has several parent volunteers that actively participate in the school. [5] After the changes of 2006 and the move to a different campus, EDS changed from a K-5 school to a K-6 school. They added the 7th and 8th grades in Fall 2007. Easterbrook's daily student schedule differs from MMS. This school houses approximately 700 students daily.
