Morebath Junction railway station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morebath Junction Halt was a small railway station at the junction of the Devon and Somerset Railway between Taunton and Barnstaple and the Exe Valley Railway which ran south from there to Exeter, South West England. The station was a single platform and was designated as a halt throughout its working life.

The station opened in 1928 and trains on both lines stopped there. This meant that it had a better service than the other and earlier Morebath station on the Devon and Somerset line, a couple of miles to the east. In addition, Morebath Junction was a lot nearer the village of Morebath, though that advantage was somewhat obviated by the lack of a road to the station, access being by a footpath across the fields from the village.

Morebath Junction was never intended to be more than a halt, and trains on the Exe Valley line continued to terminate at Dulverton, the next station to the west. Services on the Exe Valley line were withdrawn in 1963; the Devon and Somerset line services lasted only three more years, finishing in 1966.
