Moreau Catholic High School is a college preparatory Roman Catholic secondary school founded by the Southwest Province of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. It is located in Hayward, California within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland under the care of Allen Vigneron, the Bishop of Oakland. It opened in 1965 as an all-boys Catholic High School, temporarily located on the parish grounds of St. Bede's Church. That same year, construction of the permanent campus began at the current location. That construction was completed in the spring of 1967. At the request of Bishop Floyd Begin, Moreau became a coeducational institution in 1969, with the admission of 177 ninth grade girls. Moreau has twice been named a Blue Ribbon School.

Bishop Allen Vigneron and Hayward Mayor Roberta Cooper officiated at the April 30, 2006 groundbreaking ceremony for a multi-million dollar expansion at Moreau Catholic High School. The project included increasing the school library, adding a state-of-the-art life and physical science laboratory and classroom, and building a film and video arts studio and multi-media classroom. It is currently in use for the 2007-2008 school year.

In the 2007-2008 school year, MCHS also began a 1-1 laptop program. All frosh and sophomore students at the school use laptops in their classes on a daily basis. Over the next two years, each incoming freshman class will be equipped with laptops. In school year 2009-2010, all students will be using laptops as part of their school curricula.

The school community at Moreau Catholic High School use PowerSchool to manage student information including grades, attendance and parent communication. Parents use PowerSchool to stay informed about activities and grades.

Moreau Catholic, a member of the Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL), the North Coast Section (NCS), and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), offers a full interscholastic athletic program providing a total of 15 sports during the school year. Over 700 students participate during the fall, winter and spring seasons. in 2006 Girls cross Country placed 2nd at HAAL allowing them to move onto NCS (North Coast Section). The Boys Volleyball Team also went to NCS, where they competed and won twice.

[edit] Elective Programs

Moreau Catholic offers a wide variety of electives available for students. Some of the electives include Visual and Performing Arts, Student Government leadership opportunities, and a television production course known as MCTV which features student-produced documentaries and advertisements which publicize school events.

The music program at Moreau (which is part of the Visual and Performing Arts department) is also a point of pride for the school. The levels of the band include Instrumental Band (for beginning players), Symphonic Band, Honors Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, the award winning Jazz Ensemble, and the professional level Chamber Winds. These music programs are under the direction of Mr. Ted Newton.

Moreau also boasts the first Honors Dance class in the state of California. Meeting the standards of the University of California, this rigorous class challenges students both physically and academically, focusing on both modern dance technique and dance history. The dance program features four levels of technique classes: Dance Focus, Concert Dance, Dance Ensemble, and Honors. These year-long classes serve to fulfill Moreau's Visual and Performing Arts elective requirement as outlined in the curriculum. Sharing dance not only within the school community, director Angela Demmel has also choreographed works for her students that have been performed at various venues such as Julia Morgan Center for the Arts as well as Fort Mason's Cowell Theatre. Warmly received in the Bay Area dance community, the students (particularly in the higher level classes) often perform at prestigious festivals and workshops including the annual "Dance Is..." Festival, The Vision Series, and the Laura Renaud-Wilson Festival. Alums from this department have gone on to study dance at UC Riverside, UC Davis, Santa Clara University, UC Santa Cruz, St. Mary's College, University of Illinois, and CSU, East Bay.
