[edit] Page protections
It's preemptive anti-Grawp protection -- he seems to like moving featured geography articles. I'm going to put a note on my talk page saying that I'm willing to move any article I've move-protected if the move has been discussed and there is consensus for it. I really can't think of a good reason to move a featured article without any discussion. NawlinWiki (talk) 21:39, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request
Hi Moni3, if you get a chance, could you take a look at Cogan House Covered Bridge please? It is up at peer review and has gotten some good feedback, but I am too close and would appreciate another pair of eyes before I take it to FAC. Also need to write stubs for the two redlinks before then. If you can't do it, no problem. If you can, thanks in advance, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:33, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
- Happy to oblige. --Moni3 (talk) 18:04, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your very helpful review - I am not sure if I put the location sentence where you wanted it. I also left the quote at the end - not sure if you wanted that moved or not. As well as aiming for a neutral encylcopedia article, I tried to tell a bit of a story and prefer to end it with the quote worth the trip to see this beautifully restored historic treasure than with the NBI report that it is structurally bad. Are the changes OK? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:42, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
- I have printed out the article to read it aloud and the location sentence at the top of the "Names" section is just not working for me. I think it could work as a sentence in History, perhaps by itself before Background or perhaps at the start of Background (although FAC usually jumps on on one sentence paragraphs). I am trying to put it somewhere that goes with your comment: "The location information at the end of Restoration I think should be placed at the top of everything." but am not sure if this what you meant. SOrry to bug you again, and thanks in advance, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:08, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Marjory Stoneman Douglas
Hey Moni3. I see that you undid what I wrote on the MSD wikipage regarding the Gator Club of Miami and the volunteer work that was done at the Cottage's site. I went to your wiki-userpage and was surprised to see that you are a Gator as well! After undoing what I wrote, I thought you'd be a Seminole! :P Ufgatorman (talk) 17:16, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
- Ha! Indeed, I am actually by alma mater a USF Bull, but I work at UF and my family are Gators. Unfortunately, when I was applying to colleges, the Gainesville murders were very hot news and the perpetrator had not yet been caught. Ironically, he finally was arrested a mile away from the USF campus where I thought I was safely tucked away. I'm not trying to WP:OWN Marjory Stoneman Douglas, but I did work on her article to bring it to FA. I don't mind information added to it, but in her 108 years, her writings and her work greatly overshadow the upkeep of the lawn of her cottage. As well, I have to be vigilant about making sure anything added to the article has a citation. I don't want the article ending up in FAR because the quality degraded over time. Thanks for visiting my page, and understanding the revert. Go Gators! --Moni3 (talk) 17:41, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I understand -- just giving you a hard time. I definitely agree that Marjory's history is quite interesting. I thought that it was really cool that the house was the origin of the Miami Herald. Another thing I learned that was very interesting (and very fortunate) was that the cottage survived many hurricanes over the years. Much of the lawn used to have a house on top of it that got blown away by one of the hurricanes. I understand that her history is much more meaningful than some people volunteering their time to upkeep the property, BUT, I think it's important to note that people have spent their time trying to preserve Marjory's "physical" history; without people's efforts, Marjory would only be known in textbooks (and wikipedia). I would recommend adding a statement about people volunteering their weekend hours to upkeep the property (not necessarily mentioning anything about UF). One of these days I would like to work at UF! Go Gators! Ufgatorman (talk) 19:52, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Congrats!
Hey Moni, congratulations on bringing Mulholland Drive to FA status! I'm sorry I fell off in terms of providing support and working on that article, but it seems you did just fine anyway, unsurprisingly. I also fully intended to comment during the FAC but it had already been promoted by the time I took a look. I became an admin (completely unexpectedly) a few weeks ago and have been distracted by that and some other relatively trivial Wiki-stuff in the last few weeks. But I just wanted to offer a quick congrats on the FA promotion and thank you for your excellent work on the article. I was happy when you showed up on the article talk page a couple of months ago wanting to work on it, but had no idea you would do such excellent work in such short order. It's a great film that deserves - and now has - a great Wikipedia article.
If and when this article hits the main page I'll be sure to keep a careful watch on it, and I'd still like to add some stuff to the interpretations section when I get a chance, though obviously I'd discuss it first. Best, --Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 08:00, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

- Thank you, BTP. I saw your relatively unopposed RfA. Congratulations yourself. Now you get to deal with the nuttiness of the ANI page. Lucky you.
[edit] GA review of Indigenous people of the Everglades region
I've reviewed the article and left notes on the talk page. I've put the nomination on hold for seven days to allow the issues to be addressed. Feel free to contact me on my talk page, here, or on the article talk page with any concerns, and let me know one of those places when the issues have been addressed. If I may suggest that you strike out, check mark, or otherwise mark the items I've detailed, that will make it possible for me to see what's been addressed, and you can keep track of what's been done and what still needs to be worked on. Ealdgyth - Talk 18:22, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] One down...
Hooray for GA status for Indigenous people of the Everglades region! Well-deserved. I noticed you mentioned that you would be working on the various other Everglades topics, like Restoration of the Everglades. Let me know when you take it to Peer Review or if you just want some brutal feedback. I really enjoyed working with you, and I'd be happy to help again. --Cryptic C62 · Talk 15:01, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you, Cryptic C62. I need all the help I can get! I got a very good peer review for Geography and ecology of the Everglades, and I need to focus on that next now that I've posted Restoration. I think I've written the articles that needed to be written, now I need to improve them. All three, Geography and ecology of the Everglades, Draining and development of the Everglades, and Restoration of the Everglades are at Peer Review. The last one I'll being to peer review is Everglades, but I have to work on that one a lot more. Please - anything you can do, please do. Take your time. No rush. Thank you very much. --Moni3 (talk) 15:13, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: New York Times citations
Yeah, I checked the talk page first ... I obviously missed the discussion about New York Times links requiring logins at random. I've never had that problem, as long as the URL is simplified as far as possible ... see my thoughts at TonyTheTiger's talk page (and a few sections after that). In March and April, I did a fixup of around 700 New York Times links to make them freely available ... I know a bit of how it works but not everything. I try to get to the NYT articles through Google where possible, as the New York Times search service adds junk to the end of the URL which isn't helpful in a citation, which might be causing the random logons.
Re: the requirement for all online citations to be freely available, frankly that sounds like rubbish to me ... if that was true, then citations with PMIDs wouldn't be allowed and they're used all the time in medical articles. The only time a link to a site requiring registration is not allowed is in the external links section. If a site requires registration or is in PDF format, it is good to state that in the format parameter of citation templates, but those links are certainly not disallowed if they make checking the citation more convenient. I don't hang around FAC and I'm not a heavy content writer ... I'm just a WikiGnome whose been here for a while. I hardly read through policies or participate in the often nauseating discussions about them, because the principles haven't changed one bit in the last 3 years ... the policies have just become more strictly enforced and a minority of vocal editors interpret them to their own ends. [edit] Forestation of the Everglades DYK
I didn't mark it as "verified" because the hook is cited to an offline reference, i.e., a print book. That's not a deal-breaker; we use those all the time (I've created those myself ... see Radovich v. National Football League, which depends somewhat on an out-of-print book). Since I didn't actually see the words in a source document I didn't mark it. But be assured someone else will probably take it on good faith a little later ... no one has any reason to think you're making stuff up.
Good work on the Everglades articles, I should say, too. Daniel Case (talk) 02:22, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you, Daniel, for the reply and the kudos. This article in particular, I hope, gets chosen. With this hook. --Moni3 (talk) 02:25, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Stubs
I have made them for Dipholis salicifolia, Krugiodendron ferreum (my second rhamnaceae stub after Alphitonia excelsa!) and Ficus aurea, and watch for the others turning blue over the day. Also, I don't think it is Ilex aquifolium but I have no idea which species it is. Any environmental titbits you can dump with refs in any plant spp. is always welcome...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:37, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Peer review limits
Hi Moni3, since you have several peer review requests currently open, I wanted to let you know about the new guidelines at Wikipedia:Peer review/Request removal policy which places the following limits on peer review requests: "Nominations are limited to one per editor per day and four total requests per editor. Articles must be free of major cleanup banners and 14 days must have passed since the previous peer review, FAC, GAN, or A-class review. For more information on these limits see here." This was discussed at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits.
The current requests you have made can stay open (they are grandfathered in), but I wanted to make you aware of the new limits for future requests. Thanks for all your work here, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

The Original Barnstar | ||
Thanks for all your work on articles related to the Everglades! --Skizzik talk 12:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC) |
This is the first barnstar I give to someone. BTW, have you searched for images from flickr that can be used in the articles? --Skizzik talk 12:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hej pa deg! Takk, Skizzik. I am your first barnstar. That is very nice. To be honest, I think all my strengths at Wikipedia are on writing articles and not on knowing how to incorporate images from flickr. Some of the images in the Everglades article are mine. Most of the images in Geography and ecology of the Everglades are mine. I looked at your link to flickr, and some of those images are quite nice. I don't know right now if 1. it's necessary to use more, 2. which ones I might use, or 3. how to put them in the article. I'll take suggestions, for sure.
- I hope you don't mind if I ask you a question. I recently read while doing all my research, that Europeans are fascinated with the Everglades. Clearly much more so than my fellow Floridians. Do you find that to be accurate? And if so, what is the appeal? I'm interested... Thanks again for the barnstar! --Moni3 (talk) 12:41, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
-
- Do what you think will be the best, the articles are already good with some nice images. I have never uploaded images from flickr myself but it shouldn't be too hard.
- I like the Everglades because, well I just think swamps and mangroves is really fascinating environments. Last summer I went to Honduras and took a trip in a canoe in a mangrove-swamp which was amazing. I hope I can go to the Everglades in the future but I don't have the money right now. But apart from me, I don't know to many people here that share this interest.
- Nice norwegian btw ;) --Skizzik talk 17:42, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Everglades National Park
Hello. At [1] you undid an anonymous edit calling the editor a 'vandal'. I undid your undoing - 1000 new residents a year for an entity the size of Florida is really equivalent to not growing at all. Also Florida#Demographics states that the state grows by 957 residents daily, which is indeed close to 1000. - Andre Engels (talk) 07:53, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Emmy's math
Your translucent integrity shines through at the FAC. :) The math explanations are lame, incoherent and cobbled together — it's not you, I promise you. Unfortunately, there's no faking a clear explanation, as I've been doing. :( I'll be really happy if we can explain her mathematics to everyone, which requires that we understand it ourselves (ummm — oops). :( But even Freyja has to win her seat in Valhalla. ;) Willow (talk) 22:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- As I was walking to lunch with my partner I told her of Emmy's biography: most eminent women mathematician of the 20th century, if not of all history, so excited she jabbered on and confused everyone, and spilled food down her shirt front, etc. "Sounds like my kind of woman!" said my partner. (Beat) Yes, I do that too, but not about math... She read the article after lunch and had a few comments, but I should get her to elaborate since she thinks quantum mechanics is a jolly good time. --Moni3 (talk) 22:47, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Dancing queen...
Hey there guapa. ;) I have heard of the famous 41 (came across the Spanish article, at any rate :P). I'll try to translate the poem, but I make no guarantees because in some places it uses some pretty archaic Spanish, and I'm not sure I'll be able to find a good equivalent word in English. But I'll give it a shot. So, how are things going on with you? :) No RfA in the horizon yet? Hee hee! Raystorm (¿Sí?) 12:20, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- No RfA yet...*COUGH* I've been looking at the ANI page, but I can't decide if I'm needed or horrified.
- Thanks for looking at Dance of the Forty-one. I'd never heard of it and thought it an interesitng article that should be expanded...*hint*
- It's good seeing you here. Wish I saw more of you at WP:LGBT. Maybe in the future... --Moni3 (talk) 12:44, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- xDD The ANI page has that effect on users, I wonder why... :P But I'd lean towards needed *big hint* :P
- So, here you go. I missed a word ('Raso', a type of cloth) and the rythm (what rythm?) is horrible, but that's the best I can do. xD Unfortunately, I know about as much on the topic as you do, so I don't think I can expand the article much.
- I will try to be more active around here this summer. I've been focusing a lot on the Spanish Wikipedia on the last year and a half, but I miss writing articles here and bickering on the project talk with my good pals. ;) I mostly translate there, it horrifies me how many important articles are missing... But things are looking pretty good now. I'm running for Arbcom this month, and if I get elected (pretty big if there), I'll just examine cases there and focus my article writing here. ^^ Or that's the plan at least...
- Big hug! Raystorm (¿Sí?) 12:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yay! I look forward to seeing you around. Btw, I have to share that I met one of your featured articles en espanol. In February I visited with her for a couple says at her home. And in March I saw the play based on her books with her in New York. She's actually much cooler in person than I ever imagined. If you're going to ArbCom, don't let it eat you alive. I read some of the remnants of editors' careers after dealing with ArbCom. That's not something I want to be involved in. I just want to write articles and stuff... You're too valuable to lose to petty merde. --Moni3 (talk) 13:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- OMG! I'm *so* jaleous!!! :D It must have been amazing. Ahhh, not fair not fair, you get to meet celebrities and I get to meet weird new neighbours. xD
- Everyone is warning me about running for ArbCom, you're not the only one. :P Some have actually asked me to withdraw my candidacy. Don't worry, I'll be going in with my eyes wide open. To be honest, if I get too fed up I'll just come back here full time and that'll be the end of the story. :P I don't want to bore you with all the wikidrama we've had regarding the Arbcom, but we're steadily losing editors because of its (in)actions. Very bad business. I love writing articles, but the situation is pretty tough there right now. We'll see what happens. But thanks for caring :D *BIG hug* I'm so jaleous about Bannon...
