[edit] Cleanup

Since March, 2005, someone has added a great deal of content which reads like it was copied from a tourist promotional guide, except that the WP edits include misspelling and occasionally what are (apparently) missing word(s). Although I contributed content related to Carl G. Fisher, the subject of a WP featured article, I am not familiar enough with the local information to edit these other changes to meet WP standards, and I am reluctant to revert because so many edits were made. Perhaps someone familiar with Montauk can bring this article into balance and do the subject justice. Vaoverland 06:50, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm going to go ahead and move the offending parts to this talk page so that they are preserved but not up on the main page. I read them and felt just a little sick. They're quite gratuitous and obviously not up to the Wikipedia standards.--MUSpud2 04:39, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I don't know the source, but I suspect we would have had a copyright viiolation as well. Good changes, in my opinion. I will remove the cleanup flag I placed. Vaoverland 07:08, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Below is the gratuitous travel brochure filth I took off the main page. --MUSpud2 04:42, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where To Stay In Montauk

Montauk has numerous hotels and motels throughout the town. Some are right in the village such as the Memory Motel (noted in the Rolling Stones song), while others are north on the soundside such as the Tipperary Inn. For ocean swimmers, the ocean side of montauk is the best place to stay in places such as The Royal Atlantic, The Ocean Surf, or The Atlantic Terrace. The Surf Club is on the ocean, and has two story effieciency's with bedroom's on the top floor, with a view of the ocean. The best chance of finding an ocean front room is usually to go off-season or book in advance. Gurney's is a little before the village of Montauk, on the Amagansett border with a large number of ocean front rooms. They also have spa facilites and a restaurant with a view of the ocean. They are all directly on the ocean. Furthest east is the East Deck Motel in the Ditch Plains section for surfers. Up on the hill is Carl Fisher's rendition of a northeast Miami Beach. It is the large Montauk Manor with many rooms for rent, or coops available for sale. Right near town is the little English Tudor hotel - The Shepherds Neck Inn, which has not been modernized since the 50s. It is quaint and simple, but yet neglected and overpriced.

[edit] How To Get Around In Montauk

Travel

Montauk has numerous taxi's. The Pink Tuna, The Blue Dolphin and other'snamed similarly. The train also comes to an end at the tip of Long Island in Montauk!

Maps and Directions

Everywhere you go there are small printed tourist maps, showing you how to find the different attractions in montauk. Every restaurant, resort, store lobby has them.

[edit] What To Do In Montauk

Swimming, Fishing, Hiking, Tennis, Golf, Miniature Golf, Boating, Yachting, Bicycle riding, strolling, shopping, dining, breakfast at John's Pancake House, or just walking along the beach are many of the things to do in Montauk. There is one movie theater aptly named The Montauk Movie. What's playing is all that is playing!

The Deep Hollow Ranch is the oldest cattle ranch in USA, est. 1658 and open for riding.

You can pack for Montauk, or buy what you need in the village that sells or rents anything you might need for an east end excursion. Clothes stores, swim suits, bike rentals, boat rentals, a drug store that stays open late... and more. If you show up, you can get what you need while there.

While there do not fail to stop in to the Montauk Fudge shop where you can get all flavors of homemade fudge, with all types of nuts and nonsense. More importantly stop in the John's drive in for homemade Rocky Road ice cream. Home made is not a slogan.. there is a difference sufficient to warrant forgetting about cholestoral.

There are book stores, and a quiet public library to enjoy.

[edit] The Montauk Atmosphere

Restaurants are everywhere serving the freshest seafood. The Shagwong is right in town on Main Street, serving fresh seafood, and has a bar as well. The sign on the window says.. "Piano player wanted.... Knowledge of opening clams a must".. That aptly depicts the down to earth nature of the Montauk crowd. There little pubs and places to stop and have a beer! One such small pub on the water with docking for boats jokes "Montauk is a quaint drinking village with a fishing problem". That's the Montauk attitude. Fun, light, and non pretentious. While yachts may sail in to the Montauk Yacht Club... there are also Fly Fishermen.. that might walk by you while you are on the beach... carrying about twenty fish over their back just back from early surfcasting right off the beach! Viva la Montauk!

[edit] Montauk Off-season

Don't let the summer ending keep you from enjoying one of the most beautiful places on Long Island. All types of nature lovers take off to Montauk in the winter. Writers, business people, and locals all find things to do in a cold beach town with so many beautiful places, sun or snow! While most of the nightlife is very sparse in the dead of winter on a snowy December... my friends and I were amazed to open the doors to the Memory Motel's Bar and find that the previously quiet pub, errupts after 11:00pm on a Saturday night. The crowd was roaring and a super dance bad was playing with cool dance tunes. It is where to go off-season for nightlife. Like The Montauk Movie, it becomes The Nightspot.
