The Monument Avenue 10K, also known as the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K, is an annual 10,000 meter road running event, sanctioned by USA Track and Field. The race is run on historic Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. Begun in 1999, the race has grown to be the fourth largest 10k in the country and the 22nd largest race of any distance. [1]. In 2006, race registration broke the previous year's record of 17,000 and was capped at 20,000 people. In 2007 the race had over 25,000 registered runners making it the 4th largest 10k in America. Registrations for the 2008 race, to be held on 5 April 2008 are capped at 30,000 participants. The race is mainly sponsored by Ukrop's but its promotions are officially run by the non-profit group Richmond Sports Backers, which promotes other sporting events in the area.
The Massey Cancer Center in Richmond, Virginia is the charitable partner of the 10K. The Massey Fundraising Challenge supports the world-class cancer research being done there. Since 2006, runners and walkers have raised more than $350,000 for cancer research at Massey, and the 2008 goal is to raise $500,000 and eventually $1,000,000 annually.
In 2006, Barbara and Jenna Bush ran the race under aliases [2] .
