[edit] Riot
In January 2003, the school "rioted" over block scheduling, with over 1,000 students walking out of 2nd period to protest the Socorro Independent School District's decision to implement the change.[2] The riot turned into a scandal when the police and swat team pepper sprayed students resulting in several minor injuries and a few students being treated on the scene.[3] Ultimately, several students and teacher M.B. were arrested, and the school took out all the lockers in the second story locker bay which was the center of most of the vandalism performed by rioting students. The riot made its way to the front page of the New York Times due to police brutality controversies.[citation needed]
[edit] Aca-Dec
Montwood took home the title of city champions at the 2006-2007 Academic Decathlon meet held at Ysleta High School.[citation needed] Due to weather conditions, the competition was held on a single day, compressing the normally two day meet into a true one day decathlon event. This marks the first time Socorro ISD as representing El Paso at the state level, and the first in over 15 years an East Side School has won the award.[citation needed] [4]
[edit] Synergy
Synergy is a magnet program in which a group of students take all four years of core classes (Math, English, Science, and History) with the same core teachers throughout highschool.Synergy Students also have to have a Technology class every year witch include (Multimedia, WebMastering, and Graphic Design. Classes are offered in Pre-AP and Advanced Placement, putting synergy students in close competition with the other AP and GT students of Montwood who regularly take the top 10% gpa of the school. An emphasis is placed on teamwork, and the program regularly goes into "projects" in which the entire program is broken up into groups and students work together to complete large scale projects which are often later presented to the school and community members. Some projects of the synergy class of 2010 included, Cui Bono, A Day in A Life, and Global Warming, all projects organized by the Synergy Teachers.
