Montrose Academy is a secondary school in Angus, Scotland established in 1815. It has a school roll of around 1000 students, with a staff roll of 100. Most of its pupils come from the associated Primary Schools of Borrowfield, Ferryden, Lochside, Rosemount, Southesk and St Margaret’s. A number of pupils also come to us from outwith the catchment area.

The school's Rector is George Stahura. The Deputy Rectors are A. Shanks (Temporary Cover for B. Pandrich), Gordon Stewart, Anne Smith and Jim Dunbar.

The school's most famous feature is the gold dome on top of the original building. Originally the dome was copper, but was covered in gold leaf as a war memorial, paid for by Miss Blanche Mearns to commemorate her brother who had died in World War II. It features on the school's badge, a gold dome on the maroon blazer. The school tie is broad stripes of maroon and gold. The school has two war memorials, located on the east exterior wall of the Assembly Hall, bearing the names of former pupils who died in both world wars.

[edit] History of the school

Montrose Academy was founded in 1815 and succeeded the ancient Grammar School of Montrose as the principal centre of education in the town. For many years it catered for a relatively small number of pupils following a limited curriculum. Since the beginning of this century, however, it has expanded steadily in size and range of studies offered. It is now a comprehensive school of approximately 1000 pupils, which seeks to meet the educational needs of all young people in the town and surrounding district between the ages of twelve and eighteen.

The original building, with its impressive golden dome, was rebuilt and extended in 1961 and there were further changes as part of the 1988-90 Extension. This part of the building is called the East Wing.

The major work of the last Extension was the building of the East Wing, linked to the West Wing by two walkways and separated by the Precinct. This two-storey block, brought into use in October 1989, gives the school a number of teaching areas in addition to a Library, Communications Studio, Social Areas and Dining Room.

The adjacent Sports Centre has greatly enhanced the physical education and recreational facilities available to the school.

[edit] East Annexe

The East Annexe, formerly the East Links Primary School, which has been part of the school for many decades has recently been demolished. It housed music and drama, which have now relocated to the main building.

[edit] School years

As shown above the school roll is about 1000 pupils ranging from S1 to S6. Classes are separated into three houses called Esk, Lunan and Dun with pupils from S1 to S6.
