Montgomery is a city located in Montgomery County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 489. It is considered by many to be the birthplace of the Lone Star Flag of Texas. The town of Montgomery was founded by W. W. Shepperd in July, 1837 on 200 acres of land that had originally been part of the John Corner League. Montgomery became the first county seat of Montgomery County on March 1, 1838.

Montgomery is located at 30°23'22" North, 95°41'53" West (30.389406, -95.698089)[3].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8km² (4.6 sq mi). 4.5 square miles (11.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it is water. The total area is 1.31% water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there are 489 people, 199 households, and 133 families residing in the city. The population density is 108.3 people per square mile (41.9/km²). There are 243 housing units at an average density of 53.8/sq mi (20.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city is 48.51% White, 49.42% African American, 1.02% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.43% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 4.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 199 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $37,708, and the median income for a family is $38,611. Males have a median income of $31,719 versus $21,786 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,043. 11.7% of the population and 9.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
