Montfort (Netherlands)

Montfort (Limburgish: Mofert) is a town in the Dutch province of Limburg. Montfort has about 3300 inhabitants. It lies about 8 km south of Roermond. It received city rights in 1271. It is known of its ruin of a castle, build in the thirteenth century.

Until 1991, Montfort was a separate municipality. Since then, it has been a part of Posterholt and later Ambt Montfort.[1]

Since January 1, 2007, Montfort is part of the municipality of Roerdalen.

The ruin of Castle Montfort. This castle was build around the year 1260 by Hendrik van Gelre. It was centuries long the governmental centre of Ambt Montfort. The presbytery of Montfort is also one of the historical buildings in Montfort.

The mass graves and monuments on the cemetery. Here most victims of the bombardements on Montfort at the end of the Second World War were buried. The number of victims was high because at the time Montfort was a regional refugee sanctuary with 6 times its current population.

Around Montfort are many forests such as 't Sweeltje, Munichsbosch and Reigershorst.
