[edit] History

A castle existed in the area before the 11th century, around which a settlement grew. In the 12th century it was held by the Guidi family, but later was first under the influence of Arezzo and then of Florence.

Ater the unification of Italy, it became an important centre for manufacture of felt hats; today it is still a clothes production hub, while also important is the production of electric energy (one hydroelectrical and a thermoelectrical plant)
