Montbenoît is a small commune in the Arrondissement of Pontarlier in the Doubs department of France. It has a population of 219, as of 1999. The town was founded by a monk named Benoît in around 1100, and it grew upon a local abbey church that was founded and named for him.
In 1947, it was proclaimed capital of the Republic of Saugeais by Georges Pourchet, a local hotel owner, who also created the republic on the spot.
