Monrovia Handicap

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monrovia Handicap is an American thoroughbred horse race run at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California at the very last of the year or the very beginning of the year. When it is run in January, race horses officially become one year older regardless of their date of birth.

The six and one half furlong Grade III turf, run on the downhill turf course for fillies and mares four -year-olds and up, offers a purse of $100,000 added. As a sprinter’s race, it shares in importance with the Gr. III El Conejo Handicap for mainly males run at the same time.

The Monrovia is named for the local city near the track. Once upon a time, it was an entire county.
