Monitor (Polish newspaper)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monitor was the first newspaper in Poland, printed from 1765 to 1785, during the times of the Polish Enlightenment. It was founded in March 1765 by Ignacy Krasicki and Franciszek Bohomolec, with the active support from Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski. It was printed once (later, twice) a week. The name was a tribute to the 'small' Monitor, published by Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski.

Based on the English Spectator in the spirit of rationalism and religious tolerance, Monitor has contributed to the negative image of the times of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under the Wettin dynasty. It supported the reforms program and criticized the degeneration of Sarmatian culture and abuse of Golden Liberties.
