Monica Sex (Hebrew: מוניקה סקס, also spelled Monika Sex) is an Israeli rock band that is very popular among young fans and the contemporary music scene. Their music is generally characterized by its basic sound and catchy lyrics, which led many of their songs to become radio hits and greatly recognizable in Israeli culture. They had minor success, until their song Makka Aphora (Hebrew: מכה אפורה, roughly "Grey Beating") – one of a number of songs influenced by the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin – brought them under the spotlight after being chosen as the theme song of the Israeli cult series Florentin. The band is considered to be one of the most important Israeli rock groups. One of their most famous CDs is Kisses and Wounds (Hebrew: פצעים ונשיקות, Ptza'im veNeshikot), released in 1995.

[edit] Wounds and Kisses
The band was formed in 1993 in Tel Aviv, by Yaheli Sobol as vocalist and guitarist, Peter Rott as guitarist, Eldad Guetta on the organ, Yossi Hamami on bass, and Shachar Even-Tzur as drummer and vocalist. It was named after a famous female bass player, who performed some of their and Sobol's former band "Pag"'s songs.
Sobol, the leader and main artist of the group, wrote a few songs, and shortly the band began to record Wounds and Kisses. The album was released in 1995, but got little success. Yet, with their song Makka Aphora as the tittle songs of the cult series Florentin, the band became a new sensation. Since their soft rock and mainstream style, three more songs from the albums received massive airplay on the radio.
[edit] US and break up
After Wounds and Kisses, Yossi Hamami wanted to play more fusion, and left the band. A while later, the band tried its luck in the United States and performed as a trio with Rott now on bass guitar. They came back to Israel for one show as a warmup act for Sonic Youth and returned. They recorded a few songs in English, but after a year, they couldn't adapt to the lifestyle in the US and decided to break up. Sobol came back, Rott returned to Israel and became popular among several influential bands in the country, playing and recording with them. Drummer Even-Tzur stayed in the States. Meanwhile, their songs became better-known.
[edit] Open Relations and Pets
In 1999 the band made a couple of comeback performances, and in 2000 they performed alongside the loved and respected artist Berry Sakharof. In 2001 Monica Sex decided to group up again and make their second album Open Relations (Hebrew: יחסים פתוחים, Yahasim Patujim). With their past organist Eldad Guetter as producer, they recorded 12 new songs, mostly written by Sobol. Again, many songs became singles, and the album got the same immense popularity as the last one did, six years ago.
After two years Pets (Hebrew: חיות מחמד, Hayot Mahmad), their third album was released.
