[edit] Synopsis

As with all of the "one-hour" episodes this season, "Money" was produced in two parts which were initially aired together.

[edit] Part One

Michael and Jan discuss her plans to renovate their condo. Not only are the plans costly, but Jan has forced several other changes at Michael’s expense, such as trading in both cars to buy her a Porsche Boxster.

Jim and Pam discover that Dwight is running the Schrute Farm as an "agritourism" Bed and Breakfast. They spend the night there, taking part in table-making demonstrations, beet wine-making, and distributing manure. That night, however, Jim finds Dwight moaning in depression over Angela.

Michael begins leaving the office early, refusing to explain himself to his employees and lying to Jan of his whereabouts. In reality, Michael has been combating heavy debt by working as a telemarketer until 1 AM. At the office the next day, Ryan arrives to find Michael unprepared for a presentation due to his moonlighting, and orders Michael to quit his night job. At the same time, Kelly flaunts the fact that she is now dating Darryl in an attempt to make Ryan jealous.

[edit] Part Two

After quitting his telemarketing job, Michael desperately attempts to come up with money. Upon reviewing Michael's financial situation, Oscar finds that Michael spends a large amount on useless items like magic kits and bass fishing equipment.

Kelly and Darryl’s continuing relationship proves to be dysfunctional, as she cannot comprehend his candor, and he finds her to be attractive yet "crazy." Meanwhile, Andy gains Angela's approval to ask her out on a date by giving her a stray cat. Dwight, continually depressed, retreats to the stairwell. Jim joins him and recounts his days pining for Pam and how miserable it made him feel, saying he would not wish for anyone, Dwight included, to experience it. Jim passionately kisses Pam, and indirectly confesses in an interview that he loves her. Jim is quietly pleased when Dwight returns to his desk, his annoying and overbearing personality having returned.

Jan learns of Michael's dismal finances by phone, and immediately harangues Michael about being irresponsible. He panics and makes a failed attempt to hop a nearby train before she arrives promising to stand by him as he did when she was fired. Eventually, they leave the trainyard hand in hand.

[edit] Reception

"Money" received a 4.9 Nielsen Rating and a 7% Share. The episode was watched by 8.50 million viewers and achieved a 4.4/11 in the key adults 18–49 demographic.[1]

[edit] References to other episodes

  • Following two car accidents in "Fun Run" and "Dunder Mifflin Infinity," Michael asked other people to drive him around throughout "Launch Party." In "Money," it is revealed he and Jan now share a single Porsche, which Jan uses frequently. Michael takes the bus to his telemarketing job because he says he's going to "Improv" and Jan won't give him the car to do that.
  • Kevin invites his officemates to see him perform with his Police tribute band, "Scrantonicity II." He reminds them that he is no longer with the first "Scrantonicity" from "Casino Night" and "Phyllis' Wedding." This is a reference to The Police song "Synchronicity II," just as the band name was initially a reference to The Police album Synchronicity.
  • Jim asks Michael that he and Pam take up "the offer" for all of them, and Jan, to have dinner. This refers to the previous episode, "Launch Party," in which Michael proposed this to a hesitant response. An episode involving a dinner party with all of these characters later aired, Dinner Party, delayed because of the WGA strike of 2007-2008.
  • This episode marks the second appearance of Dwight's farm and cousin Mose (both first appeared in "Initiation", although Mose technically made a cameo in a picture on Dwight's desk).
  • Dwight's Dundies can be seen in his Schrute Farms decor; he is a multiple Dundie winner, referenced first in "The Dundies."
  • At his second job, Michael references his screenplay. His movie is called "Threat Level: Midnight" - first referenced in "The Client".
  • Following his recovery, Dwight uses a ruler to push Jim's papers off his desk, as he did in the "Pilot".

[edit] Notes

  • Michael compares the movies Die Hard and Live Free or Die Hard; he first mentions Die Hard as his favorite film in "Gay Witch Hunt."
  • At his telemarketing job, Michael takes on traits from the D-M office: he makes wisecracks during meetings and is popular with his co-workers like Jim, and he is unable to make any sales like Ryan, which leads the boss to criticize him much like Michael did when Ryan failed at sales in Seasons 1-3.
  • The song Dwight plays on his recorder is "You Give Love a Bad Name" by Bon Jovi.
  • Angela has Sleep Apnea.
  • Jim and Pam write a review of Schrute Farms on TripAdvisor. The page for Schrute Farms can be accessed on the real website. Jim and Pam give it a 5 of 5, and Angela gives it a 1 of 5 simply because Dwight killed Angela's cat. [1]
  • Schrute Farms only has beds near twin size. Later it could be seen that Jim and Pam pushed their beds together overnight.
  • Creed states that when he has money problems, he transfers his debt to an identity named William Charles Schneider, which is the actual name of the actor.
  • Andy says, "I come from a line of WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) so long it leads back to Moses."
  • Dwight reads from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, page 75 in the UK edition and page 85 in the American edition.
  • When sitting on the box car, Michael sings, somewhat incorrectly, "Runaway Train," a 1993 hit by Soul Asylum from their 1992 album, Grave Dancers Union.
  • When Jim enters Dwight's room, a Van Halen poster can be seen.
  • When Michael is having a meeting with his call center boss, a "Froggy-101" sticker can be seen, much like the ones in the Dunder Mifflin office (like the one beside Dwight's desk).
  • The cat Andy finds and gives to Angela does not appear to be the same cat who played "Garbage" in the previous episode, but is presumably intended to be the same cat because Andy finds it near where Dwight abandoned the cat after Angela refused it as a gift.
  • When Michael quits his telemarketing job, a takeout menu for Terry's Diner can be seen in the background. Then, the menu can also be seen in Darryl's office. Terry's Diner is a real restaurant in Scranton.
  • When the camera is near Jan in Michael's office, her push-up bra is clearly visible from the low cut top.
