The Monchique Islet or Ilhéu do Monchique (31º 16' 24″ W), west of the village of Fajã Grande, Flores Island, in the Portuguese archipelago of Azores, is the westernmost point of Europe (remote islands included). It was an important reference for the verification and calibration of the navigation instruments of ships in the period of navigation by astronomy. Between the Monchique Islet and America there is nothing else than the Atlantic Ocean (except Bermuda, which is a British overseas territory located off the East coast of North America).
