Monarchos (born 1998) is a stallion Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Kentucky Derby in 2001. This thoroughbred's time was 1:59.97 around the 1 1/4 mile track. This was the third-fastest time in the race's history, behind 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and 1973 second-place finisher Sham.
In 10 starts, Monarchos won 4 races, placed once, and showed three times. He failed to place in the top three in the Preakness Stakes, and showed in the Belmont Stakes.
Breeder Jim Squires has written an entertaining account of this "rags to riches" win, entitled "Horse of a Different Colour."
Monarchos was sired by Maria's Mon, and his dam was Regal Band. In 2007, he stood at stud at Claiborne Farm, where he earned US$7,500 for a single live cover breeding. He will stand the 2008 breeding season at Nuckols Farm in Midway, Kentucky, for $6,000. In his first set of foals, he produced five winning Thoroughbreds, but only one, Harborage, has raced in a Stakes race. He showed at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Championships.
