[edit] Art
There is a large mural of a Native American on the side of the school's gym, created by Adam Sanchez, a student in the MHS class of 2001. The mural is shown on the school's student handbooks, as well as on the posters detailing the school's ESLRs. There is also another mural, which faces the tennis courts, and also Henderson street. Although their mural faces a public street, some of the Monache parents complain about a neighboring school's mural facing a public stadium.
[edit] Music
The choir and band programs run with a combined 900-1000 total participants. Notables to come out of Monache High are current professional (Opera) musicians James Martin Schaeffer, Efrain Martinez Jr., Amber Irwin, Michelle Latour and Jonathan Raasch. All, but Michelle Latour, have been seen on stage, recently, for Opera Pacific in the city of Costa Mesa in Orange County. In the pop-music scene, notables with ties to Porterville are the bands Credence Clearwater Revival and the band Porterville.
Additionally, Monache graduate Steven Stück went on to have choral music published, of which one piece debuted at Carnegie Hall in New York. Steven has scored numerous commercial, film, choral, and orchestral projects. Credits include KISS FM Los Angeles, Fine Living Network, Flyboldt Productions (in Assoc. with 20th Century Fox), Finance & Thrift Bank, Luis Palau Ministries, Los Angeles Children's Choir, and the Plano Symphony Orchestra. Steven most recently scored a series of Behind the Scenes episodes for the upcoming film "Like Dandelion Dust[1]", based on the best selling book by Karen Kingsbury. This in addition to multiple commissioned choral works over the last several years.
The Monache High School Marching Band has also performed numerous times around the nation and around the world, including performing in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, The Rose Parade, The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Orange Bowl Parade, and The Fiesta Bowl Parade. The Band has won the title of Grand Champions at the Selma Marching Band Festival 23 Times. In 2006, they also won the Centennial Band Review and were named Grand Champions of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl Band festival, winning three of the four events of the festival: the jazz band competition, the field show competition, and the parade competition. The Marauder band did not compete in the Concert Band competition of the festival.
[edit] Controversy
Monache High has also been a source of controversy for local tribes on account of their beloved mascot, Moe, who is a Native American of an unspecified tribe. Controversy was caused as people found it to be offensive toward Native Americans. As a result, Monache High School is the only high school in the Porterville area with no mascot (as Porterville High School has a Panther and Granite Hills High School has Rocky the Grizzly.)
