As this verse says the photo was taken At the going down of the sun, The monument is set such that at dawn the Australian flag and 1914 has sunlight apon them and at sunset 1919 and the Australian flag has sunlight apon them.

The positioning of the sun/shadows alters during the year but maintains this general positioning. On the 25th April the shadows are exactly aligned, 25th April is ANZAC day this was the day that Australian and New Zealand troops 1st landed at Gallipoli and is the day that Australia and New Zealand remember the sacrifices made by their Service Personal.
