The Mololoa River is one of the biggest rivers in Nayarit, Mexico along with the Lerma-Santiago and Grande Rivers, it crosses at the peripheries of the city and it's very polluted, but in the past was a recreational area for all the Tepic citizens and marked the end of the city. At the moment the local and federal authorities are trying to clean the river, but all the attempts have been in vain.
Like many rivers this ones received it name from the local folklore and culture. Supposedly in the past there was a very powerful village of warriors who were giants and served the local gods keeping the peace and destroying demons.
There lived the extremely beautiful princess Mololoa who was the daughter of the village's chief and she was in love with the powerful warrior Sanganguey, but Trigomil (Sanganguey's younger brother) loved the princess as well. All his gifts and attempts to impress princess Mololoa were in vain, because she only had eyes for Sanganguey; so he decided that the only way Mololoa would love him was if he got rid of Sanganguey, so he waited for his chance.
One day an extremely powerful demon appeared, so the chief decided to sent his most powerful warriors and they were Sanganguey and Trigomil. Before leaving, Sanganguey promised Mololoa that he would came back and they would marry. Mololoa was very happy because her only dream was to live near her beloved Sanganguey, so she said that she would be waiting for him anxiously.
It isn't difficult to guess what happened. When Sanganguey and Trigomil were fighting the demon, Trigomil suddenly stopped fighting, his brother asked for help because the demon was over powering him, but when he received none, he got very sad. He realized that his brother had planned to kill him long ago. In spite of this, he knew that if he got killed by the demon, his brother's chance to survive would be reduced to zero, so in a last attempt to save his brother, his beloved Mololoa and the village he used all his power and sacrificed himself. He killed the demon and buried him in the deepest part of the earth, but he lost his life as well.
Realizing what he had done Trigomil fled ashamed of himself and requested the gods and his brother to forgive him. But the damage was done and would never be repaired so he killed himself, knowing there would be no punishment that would be enough to repay his sin.
The news arrived at the village and to Mololoa, that Sanganguey was dead, so she went to the place he was buried along with the demon and cried; her sorrow was so big that she died at the feet of his beloved Sanganguey crying, her crown falling near Sanganguey.
The gods saw this, and decided that Mololoa and Sanganguey would never be apart, their love would cross the centuries and their story would be known by the next generations. So they transformed Mololoa and Sanganguey, into a river and a mountain so they would never be separated by any human or demon. They had received their heaven. And in consideration to the infinite love Sanganguey had for his brother they decided to not sent him to hell, but he will suffer his punishment, because he will never be able to be near his brother and Mololoa again, and he will live with the knowledge that he would never be able to apologize to them for the damage he caused.
Mololoa's crown is known today as Molcajete Hill and is near the volcano of Sanganguey. The river Mololoa is born in Sanganguey also. And there is a volcano named Trigomil in Jalisco, but is very far from Tepic.
