Known for | Claiming to be one of the world's oldest people |
Moloko Temo (claimed birthdate of July 4, 1874) of South Africa is self-proclaimed to be the oldest living person in the world at 133 years of age. This makes her claim four years older than any other current claim, with Habib Miyan of Rajasthan, Jaipur, India being in second place. That would also mean that she is old enough to be the mother of world's official oldest person Edna Parker. However, her age has not been verified by Guinness World Records.
Temo's claim comes from a government identity document issued to her in 1988, according to the Afrikaans-language Beeld Daily. The problem is that a document issued in 1988 does not prove a birth occurred in 1874. Rather, the age claimed was a guess. Given the ages of Moloko's children, it would seem she could be thirty years younger than claimed (for example: 133-79=54 years old, but 103-79=24 years old for her first child), making her not even a supercentenarian.
Temo currently lives with her 79-year-old daughter, Evelyn, in the northern South African province of Limpopo. She has eight children, 29 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Despite media claims to the contrary, Guinness World Records has given no indication that they plan to accept this claim. Given the lack of evidence and the extreme unlikelihood of this case being true, it can be taken as more a media story than reality.
