[edit] Plot

Molly Moon is an orphan who lives at Hardwick House is frequently in trouble but her best friend Rocky Scarlet is always there to help her. During the cross-country race at school, she and Rocky have an argument. By the end of it Rocky storms away and Molly goes to the library. She finds a book of hypnotism. As she finds it a man is yelling at the librarian asking for the book. She then learns the lessons in the book but she finds that chapters 7 and 8 ('hypnosis using voice alone' and long 'distance hypnosis') are missing. She then wins the talent competition by hypnotising everyone and she goes to New York to look for Rocky who has been adopted by an American couple.

When Molly gets to New York, she gets a part in the musical 'Stars on Mars' stealing Davina Nuttel's part. After the show, 'Professor' Simon Nockman kidnaps Petula and blackmails Molly into robbing a bank so she can get Petula back. The bank robbery goes as plan but Rocky uses long distance voice-hypnosis to hypnotize Nockman to give all the jewels back to Molly and Rocky. They then return all the jewels (except one diamond which Molly realises is crucial for stopping the world in the second book) in garden gnomes.

When they return home, they make Nockman come with them. When the arrive at the orphanage, they find that the hypnotized Adderstone and cook of the orphanage have gone and the orphanage has fallen into disarray. Along with Nockman's help, Molly and Rocky get the orphanage into a livable condition and they get Mrs Trinklebury to run the orphanage and Mr Nockman helps as well. The orphanage is re-named 'Happiness House' and the money that Molly earned in New York is used to buy new things and decorate the orphanage. However, it is implied that Nockman has returned to his old ways as he steals a camera, a lollipop and five pounds from children in the orphanage.

At the end of the book, Molly goes down to the library without knowing why and she takes the book of Hypnotism with her. When she gets there, she finds that she was hypnotized by the librarian (Lucy Logan, who turns out to be her mother (second book)) to find the book and keep it for 4 weeks.

At the end, a chapter tells of what is happening to Adderstone and the cook, Edna.
