A molar equivalent of a substance is an amount of matter quantity, multiplied by a stoichiometric factor, which depends on the exact reaction. The normality is defined as molar equivalent per litre. The gram equivalent is the same.
For example, to burn 12 grams of carbon into carbon dioxide, a molar equivalent of oxygen is needed.
- C + O2 → CO2
12 grams of carbon is about one mole of carbon, and by stoichiometry, one mole of oxygen is needed, which is about 32 grams. For this particular reaction, 32 grams of oxygen is approximately the molar equivalent of 12 grams of carbon.
