[edit] Deleted images

As User:SoM has repeatedly refused to provide an Edit summary or Talk page entry explaining his image deletions, here is the explanation he grudgingly provided on my Talk page:

"Sorry, I thought it was obvious to anyone of intelligence that five FU images in an article that length, especially redundant ones, can't actually be FU. Clearly, you aren't among that grouping." - SoM 02:38, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 'MacTaggert' vs. 'MacTaggart'

I've restored the article to the most common spelling of the character's name, which began in the first panel of her introducing herself (as shown within the article), and in most of her appearances and references within the comics. The comics themselves are the canon on which we base the articles. I am aware that the X-Men Encyclopedias have misspelled her name. It is the supplemental sources that are most often misspelled, and her guest appearances in other titles.

Claremont, the character's creator, has been extraordinarily consistent (especially for him) in the spelling of her name. And, for the most part, the rest of mainstream has followed suit.

---

I reiterate. The -supplemental sources- such as encyclopedias, misspelled her name. One instance of an online source documenting "MacTaggart" as the proper spelling has absolutely no bearing on the fact that the most common spelling throughout the comics, and thus the canonical standard, was "MacTaggert." The instances of other spellings were remarkably rare in comparison.

Please do an experiment before 'correcting' the article again. Go to Google. Type, in quotation marks "Moira MacTaggArt." Count the entries. Type "Moira MacTaggErt." Note the significant increase in entries.

As a reference, this article is supposed to reflect the 'facts' of the Marvel Comics. MacTaggert is, in fact, the most common spelling of the name. Established in her first appearance, and kept throughout her run in the comics.

Considering the wide margin of difference between "MacTaggert" and "MacTaggart" on the internet, when people come to Wikipedia to look up the character, it is fairly safe to assume they are going to search under the most common usage of her name.

First, you say 'supplemental sources' as if the Handbooks are 'opinions'. They are not. They are FACT. I don't think you understand the weight they hold. They are the final word on the subject. So, truly, I need not say any more, but I will continue so you understand without confusion.
Google can NOT be used to determine anything, except that people spell something one way more than another way, not which is correct. If more people wrote about the sun going round the Earth, what do you think you would find if you googled it?
You mention the wide margin of people looking up the various spellings of the name and being more likely to find the MacTaggert (mis)spelling, the MediaWiki software has the ability to redirect users to the correct spelling (MacTaggart).
This article is supposed to reflect the facts. How is it then, that you keep changing the article AWAY from what Marvel has recently stated to be the case? If you are as dedicated to bring the truth to the reader, then I will not change the article back. I will instead emplore you to do the research for yourself and correct it.

I would very much like for you to realize I do not lightly change the name. I've just gathered a random sample of comic books from the top of my pile. I can follow up and quite literally go through every appearance of the character if required. I do not wish to do that.

X-Men 96 - Chris Claremont - 1st App - "'Housekeeper,' he says--'a nice widder-woman, name of Moira MacTaggert...'"

X-Men 127 - Chris Claremont - Proteus Saga - "Atop a nearby knoll, Moira MacTaggert aims and fires with grim determination, driving Proteus away from his helpless prey and out onto open ground."

Uncanny X-Men 278 - Chris Claremont - Muir Island Saga - "Home to geneticist Moira MacTaggert... and haven to mutant-kind longer than either cares to think about."

Uncanny X-Men 303 - Scott Lobdell - Death of Illyana - "Me and her were in the sick bed part, while Doc MacTaggert and the Prof were buttin' heads over what to do for Peter's sister."

X-Force 38 - Fabian Nicieza - Phalanx Covenant - "Dr. Moira MacTaggert stands alongside the collective mutant teams of Excalibur, X-Force and X-Factor, her insides churning, as they struggle to find a key to the threat posed by the Phalanx."

"Excalibur 72" - Richard Ashford - Sinister - "This woman, Moira MacTaggert, was mother to the most dangerous mutant to stride the earth, Proteus."

Excalibur 91 - Warren Ellis - Pub Night - "MacTaggert? Aw, Kitty, for God's sake--MacTaggert hates me."

Cable 29 - Jeph Loeb - Studying X-Man - "What goes unsaid is far too painful. For Moira MacTaggert is the only known case of a human contracting the deadly 'Legacy Virus'."

X-Man 26 - Terry Kavanagh - X-Man comes to Muir - "Glad we didn't have a chance to test that one, MacTaggert."

Bishop 16 - Scott Lobdell - Attack on Muir - "Rahne Sinclair is a mutant. And she calls this island compound her home, and it's owner, Dr. Moira MacTaggert--one of the world's foremost experts in the field of human genetic mutations--her adoptive mother."

Uncanny X-Men 390 - Chris Claremont - Legacy Cured - "Her name was Dr. Moira MacTaggert--a reknown geneticist who spent the last several months of her life racing against the clock."

Ultimate X-Men 17 - Mark Millar - 1st full Ultimate app - "Cyclops and Marvel Girl are in Russia, Doctor MacTaggert..."

That's really respectable that you are able to bring those sources... I know you and I can find lots of instances where it was spelled MacTaggert. There are also cases where it has been spelled McTaggert and McTaggart, as well. I don't know if you have had the chance to look at the the link I provided earlier. It does, however, trump all other sources on the matter. If the writers at Marvel are worth their salt, they are likely to follow the new correct spelling of the name going forward.

Quite honestly, my point is and always has been that it was always spelled MacTaggert within the comics, with only very rare instances of other spellings. Very rare. All of the authors who were regulars at handling the character spelled it, consistently, MacTaggert. The other spellings were, throughout her run in the comics, easily identifiable as the typos.
As such, I honestly cannot easily accept the source you gave me as retconning the character's name as it has been consistently presented since 1975. The comics are where we get our source material, and they are the canonical source for the information about these characters. The encyclopedia's are summaries.
Chris Claremont created the character. And Chris Claremont, throughout her entire life and up to after her death, provided the standard for his creation as "MacTaggert". The writers of the encyclopedia retroactively going back and declaring that he spelled the name of the fictional character who he made up incorrectly jars the wrong way.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Mactaggert 3.jpg

Image:Mactaggert 3.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
