[edit] Potential Copyright Issues

Looks like the content for the article has been taken from http://www.geocities.com/anisharaja/rafimain.html . I didn't find any copyright issues, however it'll be good if the site is credited over here. Jay 14:46, 4 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean, no copyright issues. If we don't have explicit permission to use it, it's illegal, and I can't see any permission.... Morwen 12:39, 23 Nov 2003 (UTC)
True, this is also what the first issue in Wikipedia:Copyright_issues says. My earlier impression was if a website doesn't have an explicit copyright notice, it's as good as public domain.
Another Wiki article by the same author (User:Best_Friend) lifted from a website is Dilip_Kumar. But he deleted the article wihout wikifying it. Also he is yet to provide the source of the image he has uploaded. See his talk page for details. Jay 09:38, 27 Nov 2003 (UTC)
This discussion should be thing of past. I've added much to this article in 2004. Utcursch

[edit] Largest number of songs

The article says that Mohd Rafi holds the record (along with Lata Mangeshkar) for the largest number of songs recorded. I don't think that is true any more. I remember reading that the Guinness record for the largest number of songs recorded by a male singer is now with S P Balasubramanyam (around 36,000), even though Lata holds the overall record. 12.175.5.133 16:37, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)ashwatha I don't think so.. Rafi still holds largest number of songs

[edit] West Indies

Small detail but in the first paragraph, West Indies is mentioined as a country. West Indies is a coalition of different countries: Barbadoes, Jamaica etc. Fkh82 22:38, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Fixed. utcursch | talk 08:26, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categorized Songs Listing

Is this encyclopedic. In my personal opinion, this is unnecessary for a Wikipedia article; the list is simply unmaintainable. Should it be removed? We can have a list of famous/popular songs instead. Please vote. utcursch | talk 04:34, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Remove the section

  1. Agree. Replace with a famous/popular songs listing. utcursch | talk 04:34, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
  2. Agree. Suggestion: Why not convert it into a Wiki list? --Mayuresh 08:11, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Keep the section

Done. Removed some of the songs and made the section title Famous/popular songs. utcursch | talk 15:21, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Neutral Point of View - this article is totally biased

This article is totally biased, and desperately needs a rewrite. Madder 00:46, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you're right. The article reads as if it were written by a demented fan. I don't have time to rewrite it. Can you? Zora 04:36, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
It's quite a job, and a lot of it does look like it should just be removed. For example the heading 'Mohammed Rafi's rise to glory, his ever lasting supreme caliber and mastery over music and melodies:' - all the text under that seems like gibberish to me. Or is that just me? Madder 17:03, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Latest Edits by User:Sreekanthv

Just to say thanks for these edits, there's a lot of new content there. However, it's still very biased: for example, things like describing Rafi as an "extremely humble person" - says who? And also saying "He continues to command the inspiration and adoration of millions of music lovers and innumerable new Bollywood playback singers" - again, says who? That's just an opinion, this is supposed to be an encyclopedia. What is 'millions'? Hope we can get this article improved, cheers, Madder 00:39, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

thanks, as i too aware of things like "He continues to command the inspiration and adoration of millions of music lovers and innumerable new Bollywood playback singers" which was added into previous editions by someone else- actually he is the person who started to put so many sentenses giving a tone of "tribute" rather than encyclopedia. plz see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mohammed_Rafi&diff=97039614&oldid=90506347

and Venktrajan is the person who started this business!!!!!!!!1 we have to remove such sentences.....

Sreekanthv 12:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree there is a hell lot of things there that is rather look like a memoir by a fan than encyclopedia article! but honestly its not me who has done these usage of language and given a fan site look.. it was given by someone else...i only managed to remove upto that extent only..we have to make it look good...please see very old editions of the same article ..you will see that suddenly some guy had done lot of things in between and it became extremely messes up....thanks Sreekanthv 05:01, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

I think that some of you are against Rafi...Well a lot of issues are Facts while some are 'opinions' held by Majority of people. 'Madder' you pointed out:"He continues to command the inspiration and adoration of millions of music lovers and innumerable new Bollywood playback singers" - again, says who? Well it is said by many Including SONU who thinks of RAFI as his GURU. And you again doubt that RAFI was a humble person. Well Madder it is actually your own opinion. Most of the people agree with what is written over here. Well anyone can doubt anything in any article.......anyways it can go on..but Finally RAFI does not neend Wikipedia to Praise him....he Lives in Millions of hearts including mine.....just as Rafi sang "Tum mujhe yun Bhula na pao ge" User:Saim.m

The above discussions have lead me to believe that the best compromise to the various points of view and also, to maintain accuracy, is to use quotes from people in the know - Rafi's peers. If they are making these statements, the acusation that this is the work of a demented fan cannot be made. After all if these illustrious people cannot give an opinion on their art (and Rafi) who of us can?

Please read this article. This was written by someone that has been neutral since he has been around when Kishore, rafi, Lata, mukesh or when mannadey sang and please tell me what you think of it.

[edit] Why belittle Rafi to praise Kishore?

Like Shrikant has said some folks have spoken negatively regarding Rafi. I believe that has only been done to praise Kishore Kumar or vice versa. I'm positive those are Kishore fans that are trying to prove something that's not true. Kishore and Rafi are incomparable. Both have had their primes and both are undoubtedly great singers. One may have a preference over the other but that doesn't make the other less talented. You must admit that! So please stop trying to make up your own facts regarding either one of these fine singers and accept them for what they do.

If you like one over the other, that's ok. But please don't go crazy with it and try to persuade others. Because you just CAN'T.

[edit] Comments by the singers

I just read these comments while listening to "Chahoonga Main Tujhe". It truly brought water to my eyes . A man with an excellent character, Rafi Sahab was. May God bless his soul.

Unfortunately my friend, "Madder" decided that this information was "uncited" although the weblink to the author's article was included, but he deemed it spam! Rather than reintroducing the information just for him to cut it again (note their was no comment as to why this was done in this discussion page (the audacity of some people is always a joy to behold), those of you who want to look at it can find this version dated 16 June 2007 under the history tab above or follow this weblink: http://www.screenindia.com/fullstory.php?content_id=10927.

This was my humble attempt to get some clarity to Rafi's legacy from his peers - who better to give a neutral and unbiased opinion on the man then these experts who know their art and are far more informed then any of us. Considering Rafi's popularity around the world 27 years after his death I thought Wikipedia could benefit from an explanation as to why the Rafi pehenomenan exists. Madder made no attempt to discuss the matter with anyone on this forum nor investigate the accuracy of this important information, rather just cut it away - sad but it says something about the chap's motivations I reckon. Perhaps some people just need to get a life...

I just saw the 10 minute interview of Rafi Sahab on YouTube. I don't know him personally but I can sincerely say that he looks a very humble man. Suspenseboy 13:40, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rafi's picture

What do we have to do to get his picture that can be posted on Wikipedia?

  • Picture has been uploaded.

[edit] Is it true?

I've read somewhere that Kishore and Lata, both, were asked to sing Chahoonga Main tujhay and both of them had trouble singing the part " Mitwaa ". Is this true?

[edit] Why the argument ?

I really dont know whats the argument all about, there is know doubt as to who was and who is the greatest singer in indian cinema, so please you guys don't even try to talk about him without knowing about hindi music and songs, if you want a proof just sing one rafi song and one kishore kumar or any other singers song yourself and you will start laughing at yourself as to why did you ever even think about even starting an argument about this, please do it , i swear you will find the answer. Posterity has perhaps given the answer of who was greater - Rafi or Kishore. Whereas Rafi represented the past, Kishore was the future. rafi sung the Hero's song (Tum bin jaon Kahan) and Kishore sang the father's song. Today only the Kishore version is sung. There have been many Kishore Rafi duels in films, especially of Rishi Kapoor. it is Kishore's song which swayed the day and continue to be superhits today. Rafi was study personified- he was trained in classical music. Kishore was a genius, untrained in music, but initiated a whole new style, which has charmed all the generationns since then.manipulation of the Binaca Geetmala, the several award functions also deserves research and mention. If you really are a good music lover and want to give merit based on the high technique and talent used in the song then there is no doubt in my mind that the winner will be rafi, just because kishore sang songs in which wordings and music were used to get instant popularity doesnt mean that he becomes a greater singer. no doubt that he has sung good songs but the ratio was very low you guys have heard only songs which a popular but kishore and sung inumerable songs which were down right useless, in case of rafi the ratio was always 9 is to 10 most of the times and coming back to talent one can see a wide range of octaves high and low in a rafi song and almont none in kishore kumar song, he was like the kumar sanu of 70s and 80s. This is not an argument of a fan of rafi but genuinely a voice and talent of rafi can only come once in a life time. just listen to the song "teri galiyon me na rakhen ge kadam" and "o phirkiwali", just see the wide rage of this singer he just sets the mood of the song in the first line itself

[edit] Reference

Indianetzone.com's articles are taken from older versions of Wikipedia article (eg. Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar etc.) -- so it can't be used as a reference. utcursch | talk 09:49, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Incident

One should also mention the incident of Rafi holding Lata Mangeshkar's hand during a recording and his underhand tactics of introducing Suman Kalyanpur to replace her. Researchers should also mention about the underhand tactics that he played in retaining the top slot against his contemporaries. His manipulation of the Binaca Geetmala, the several award functions also deserves research and mention. Look at the dirt what people can think of a greatest singer of our nation, this sad. Please give use concrete proof before blabbering out such lies —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sakharam1987 (talk • contribs) 17:42, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
