Ustād Mohammad Hussain Sarāhang (1924–1983) is a renowned Tajik musician of Afghanistan and famous in all over India, Pakistan and Iran. He was born in Kharabat, an area in the old city of Kabul. He learned the basics of music from his father Ustad Ghulam Hussain, a well known musician. He then left to Patiala School of Music in India to learn the Perso-Indian Classical Music. After 16 years of learning before Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan, known as "The light of Punjab", he returned back to Kabul at the age of 25. He was shortly awarded the title of Sarāhang by the government of Afghanistan.

Ustad Sarahang is one of the greatest Masters of Eastern Classical Music, a professional musician in North Indian Classical Music (see Indo-Persian culture). He performed various genres of music: khayal, thumri, tarana, ghazal and others. He earned the following titles and degrees from various Music Schools of India:

  • Title of “Baba-e Musiqee” (The Father of Music) in his final concert in New Delhi, India 1979
  • Title of “Sher-e Musiqee” (Lion of Music) in his last performance in Allahabad 1982

Ustad Sarahang has recorded about 500 Raags and Ghazals in India and in Radio Kabul. He has sung mostly the Ghazals of Amir Khusraw and Abul Ma'āni Bedil, the famous poets of Indian School of Poetry in Persian, as he was a famous Bedil Shenās (Bedil Expert).

He wrote two books about the Classical Music and Raags, Qānūn-e Tarab (The Law of Music) and Mūssīqī-e Rāg-hā (Music of Raags). He has also created or composed several Raags including Hazra and Minamalee.
