Mogue Kearns

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Father Mogue Kearns (d. July 12, 1798) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and United Irishmen.

Kearns was born into a farming family at Kiltealy, on the slopes of the Blackstairs Mountains. He was ordained and appointed curate at Balyna but was dismissed due to his political activities. Thereafter, Kearns settled in Enniscorthy and led a poorly armed force of 2,000 in an attack against the garrison at Bunclody. On June 1, Kearns ignored Myles Byrne's advice to send a detachment to the Carlow road and cut off the garrison's retreat. Instead he began the attack, forcing the garrison to retreat, but only to lose the battle when crown reinforcements counter-attacked.

On July 12, 1798 he and Anthony Perry were executed at Edenderry, County Offaly.
