Mogadishu University

Mogadishu University (Arabic: جامعة مقديشو‎) is non-governmental university in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. The idea to establish a non-governmental Educational Institution started in June 1993 according the official website Mogadishu University, after which it took 5 years to develop and open the University. September 22, 1997, Mogadishu University was officially opened as non-governmental, non-profit institution for higher learning, governed by the Board of Trustees and the University Council.

Currently, the University has Centers: Center for Community Services & Continuing Education, Institute for Somali Studies & Somali Center for Water and Environment, and Institute of Languages. It also currently offers post-graduate programs in cooperation with Omdurman Islamic University.

At the present, the University consists of five faculties, which award BA, BSC degrees and a nursing institute (High Institute of Nursing), which produces qualified nurses with three years diploma. The University also established an Institute for Somali Studies (ISOS) and a Center for Continued Education, which coordinates public services through symposia, workshops and other management training courses. The following is the list of faculties:

  • Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences
  • Faculty of Economics & Management Sciences
  • Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology
  • Faculty of Nursing
  • Faculty of Political Sciences & Information

Mogadishu University had relocated all its activities to its newly built campus in the outskirts of Mogadishu. For this occasion, all students, teaching staff and administrations had gathered in the hall of the Faculty of Education Building to commemorate this historic event. Dr. Ali Sheikh, president of Mogadishu University had officially announced the beginning of the new academic year.

The new campus was initiated three years ago with the assistance of the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah and support of many donors. Currently, four buildings are almost completed for opening. Those new buildings will be occupied by the Education Building, Sharia Building, Economics Building and the Administration Offices. According the website of the University, the Mogadishu University received support fund from the American Government.


Currently, the University accepts students who have graduated from secondary schools or those who have GCE equivalent certificates who are qualified to join the university. Prior to the enrollment, students sit for qualifying examinations, after passing of which they proceed to enroll in their program of study.

Admission requirements for the University as listed on their website include:

  • Original secondary school certificate plus one copy.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Certificate of good conduct.
  • 12 photos (6 x 4) cm.
  • Completed application form.
  • Payment of the registration fee.
  • Passing written and oral entrance examinations.


Mogadishu University was also invited to join the Somali Aid Coordination Body (SACB) Educational Sector Committee. On 21 September 2004, the MU representatives in Nairobi: Mr. Fathudin Mohamed and Westley Bii and Hussein M. Iman (MU Program Director) attended the SACB Educational Sector Committee meeting in Nairobi Kenya.

During that sectoral meeting, the MU team presented the MU strategic plan for the period 2003 - 2007. The meeting participants from different international NGOs and UN Agencies placed many questions and discussed the MU plans. The participants also gave their constructive suggestions for improving the MU plans and warmly welcomed Mogadishu University to regularly attend the SACB Educational sector meetings usually held in Nairobi.

On Thursday April 27, 2006 The University of Kansas African Studies Center, the African and African American and Political Science departments held a seminar titled "From African Renaissance to African Pragmatism: The Landscape of Contemporary African Politics" featuring Dr. Abdinur Sh. Mohamed, Mogadishu University Representative of North America as its keynote speaker.

The University of Kansas has a faculty and educational exchange agreement with Mogadishu University. To celebrate the KU-MU agreement Dr. Mohamud was invited to speak to the faculty and students of the University of Kansas on Somalia, the challenges of establishing a university in a stateless society and the progress made by Mogadishu University since its inception in 1997.

Recently, two delegates from MU Dr. Abdurahman Moalim Abdullahi, the Chairman of Board of Trustee and Dr. Abdullahi Farah Asseyr MD, Adviser of the President & Head of Health Affairs at MU paid 10 days visit in Norway in which they signed a partnership agreement with the University of Tromsø.
