Modern Skate & Surf was founded in 1979 in Royal Oak, Michigan. It has since expanded to four locations, with additional business housed in Lansing, Novi and Grand Rapids at the Centerpointe Mall. When the store opened, it specialized in roller skates and ice skates. It soon expanded to include in-line skates (and was one of the first thirty stores in the world to carry Rollerblade), snowboarding, wakeboarding, and skateboarding equipment.
