[edit] Synopsis
The story takes place almost completely outdoors on a large estate. A man in his twenties inhabits the area, going about his daily upkeep of the property. He cleans the swimming pool, sweeps the tennis court and rearranges patio furniture.
He begins experimenting with household objects. Sometimes his interaction with these objects is playful (he rolls a tennis ball down a slide), sometimes it is violent (he stomps on a hose), sometimes it is ritualistic (he creates an offering out of stones and slate) and sometimes it is sexual (he lovingly strokes an orchid).
The man creates a Bocce type game with sticks, grass and large rocks. He puts two traffic cones atop a fully extended ladder and walks, trying to maintain balance holding the long metal expanse.
The man explores every aspect of the estate. He stares at outside lights and roots through the garden with his hands. He finds a small piece of petrified wood in the ground and later re-buries it.
The man ventures inside his house. He replaces a colorful painting of a sailboat on the sea with a gray still life, but quickly changes the picture back. He approaches a wall full of photographs of people. The young man finds a picture of himself as a child crawling on a ledge, smiling. He removes it from the wall, delicately wraps up the photograph, and stores it in a safe place.
In the final sequence, the young man plays piano, looks in a mirror with an air of satisfaction and showers with his clothes on. He opens a series of cabinet doors in a narrow hallway. The film ends when he turns around and walks down the hallway, closing the cabinets.
