[edit] History

Modern High School for Girls was founded by Mrs. B.M. Birla on January 3 1952. The School was set up at 28, Camac Street initially with Mrs. Violet Clarke as the first Principal. In 1953, the senior school moved to a new location 33, Theatre Road (now Shakespeare Sarani), Calcutta (now Kolkata). The junior school remained at the same location.

The foundation stone for the present school building was laid by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy on December 9, 1957 and in March 1960; the senior school was transferred to the present building at 78, Syed Amir Ali Avenue.

The school had efficient Headmistresses all along.[citation needed] Mrs. Clarke was followed by Mrs Robeiro during the early 60’s, followed by Mrs. Pastakia from 1963-65. Mrs I.L. Wilson de Roze was Headmistress for the longest period, from 1965-2000. The present Principal, Mrs. D. Kar, joined in April, 2000.

In the academic field MHS created history in 1968 when Malabika Chakravarty - a Humanities student, broke all records and stood first among all the groups in the Higher Secondary Exams.[citation needed] Throughout, girls in different batches have secured ranks in the Secondary and Higher Secondary Examinations.

In 1985, 'Maitree', the inter-school fest organized by classes XI and XII, was held for the first time at the Ice Skating Rink. In March 1987, the foundation stone for the Science Hall with the Planetarium was laid. Computer classes started in the Science Hall from February 1988, after its inauguration. Modern High School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2002.

MHS has an established reputation for academic excellence and for providing its students a stimulating learning environment.[citation needed] Its curriculum is dynamic with communication skills, environmental projects, community service, health and value education, art and aesthetics seamlessly built into the school programme.[citation needed] The school places priority on the learning-teaching process and the focus is on enquiry and creativity, rather than passive learning and aggressive competition.[citation needed] Thus pursuit of academic intelligence and development of diverse talents form integral aspects of school life.

[edit] The School Song

Oh School in which we labour, life's purposes to know.
May we be ever worthy of what thou dost bestow.
We pledge, ourselves to serve thee, bring honour to thy name
That all the land of Bharat may echo with thy, fame.

Oh Land of Gautam Buddha, the eight-fold path we'll trace
Oh Land of great Ashoka, thy dharma we'll embrace,
Oh Land of the Mahatma, to thee we dedicate
Ourselves, our hopes, ambitions,
Our lives we consecrate.

Oh teach us, Alma Mater, to be both pure and true
That we may ever serve thee in grace and virtue too.
Shed the pure light of learning and ignorance dispel,
Oh teach us, Alma Mater, to ever do things well.

Oh teach us, Alma Mater, to be both pure and true
That we may ever serve thee in grace and virtue too.
Shed the pure light of learning and ignorance dispel,
Oh teach us, Alma Mater, to ever do things well.

Oh Land of Gautam Buddha, the eight-fold path we'll trace
Oh Land of great Ashoke, thy dharma we'll embrace,
Oh Land of the Mahatma, to thee we dedicate
Ourselves, our hopes, ambitions,
Our lives we consecrate.
