Modern Apizza, is a popular pizza restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut.
Modern Apizza was founded in 1934 and has been in the same spot ever since. Unlike the other well-known New Haven pizzerias, such as Pepe's or Sally's, Modern Apizza is not located on New Haven's famous Wooster Street but rather on nearby State Street in the East Rock neighborhood. Like the Wooster Street pizzerias, Modern also serves the New Haven-style thin-crust apizza (closely related to Neapolitan-style Italian pizza) which is baked in coal-fired brick ovens. They also exclusively stock Foxon Park soft drinks, made in East Haven, Connecticut. Modern's specialities include the Clams Casino (Clams, Bacon & Peppers) and the Italian Bomb (Sausage, Bacon, Pepperoni, Mushroom, Onion, Pepper & Garlic).
While most of the tourists flock to Wooster Street for New Haven pizza, many of the locals go to Modern. Many locals have commented that Modern Apizza is the same great Wooster Street taste but without the crowds, long waits, and attitudes from staff. Many also refer to Modern Apizza as "New Haven's best kept secret". “I guess we’re more the local, family friendly restaurant than the place where all the tourists like to go,” said Bill Pustari, owner of Modern Apizza since 1988. “We really don’t do anything distinctively different than at Sally’s or Pepe’s. We all make ‘New Haven-style’ thin-crust pizzas baked in a brick oven. Like in Manhattan, a tourist would probably go down to Little Italy for an authentic Italian dinner. But New Yorkers know that there are good Italian places all over town.”
In addition to throngs of New Havenites confidently claiming Modern’s pies are the best in town, it has also won the New Haven Advocate’s Best of Reader’s Poll for “Best Pizza” nine years in a row.
