[edit] My name Is Mo
Keen to detach herself from the "wannabe Bic Runga/Anika Moa/Brooke" label that comes with competing as a female soloist in Smokefree Rock Quest, Moana got a band together to play her music. Her once mellow sounds now have a new element of rock that is the new talk about Wellingtown.
In gigging and jamming with her band (Ciaran O'Regan- Lead Guitar, Dan Kelly- Bass, and Tim Sampson- Drums) on a regular basis Moana has found that she has created a completely new genre of music better epitomising her sound. “I don’t like to be pigeon-holed but when people ask what kind of music we play it's important that I’m able to define my own music. So I just say its hush rock. It’s kinda rock but softened with blues, abita soul; hush rock.”
Moana says she doesn’t really listen to that much music in her spare time. “If I’m driving in my car I don’t like to have the radio or a CD playing or anything I mean my iPod is somewhere on my desk collecting dust … in terms of inspiration for my music I like to keep a clear and open mind. Other than that I look to my friends and what they listen to which is everything.”
Moana is also working on several side projects including songs with Daimon Schwalger (the Nomad). These explore a different style of music to the band including hip hop and R&B.
