Article in Flight International 18-24 March 2008 - 'Co-pilot may have impeded throttle on American 777' - The 777 cockpit layout means the first officer might have unintentionally obstructed the left-hand throttle lever while activating the speed-brake. [edit] AfD nomination of 2008 Farnborough plane crash

An editor has nominated 2008 Farnborough plane crash, an article which you have created or worked on, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2008 Farnborough plane crash and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:59, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Farnbrough crash

Yeah, I was about to do that but was beaten to the punch. I found the "it crashed into a house, so it's notable" argument rather unconvincing: a plane has to crash into something, SE England has quite a lot of houses, and unless one of those houses happened to be Windsor Castle, that doesn't seem especially notable, though I suppose having "notable" people on board swayed people too. Anyway, best, Biruitorul (talk) 18:36, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Gazette (BOAC Flight 712)

Sorry, I missed out the param saying that the page is from a supplementary gazette (the urls are structured differently). Should be OK now. Davis's MBE will have been gazetted too - I was lsightly surprised that it wasn't in the same Gazette, but I don't think I've missed it, but I seem to be failing to turn it up on the search at the moment - did he have a middle name at all? David Underdown (talk) 10:12, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

False positive I'm afraid. The bloke at Heathrow was called Fennell, he was just on the same page as Davises and Johns. David Underdown (talk) 14:15, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] VS LHR Accident

Hm, well, I just thought that eleven years after the fact it doesn't really represent an important part of Heathrow's history in any way in which it might have had a long-term effect on the airport. It's already contained on the Virgin Atlantic page, and I would argue has much more relevance on there. NcSchu(Talk) 15:07, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I usually try to rule using WP:AIRPORT's guidelines (the accident was fatal to either the aircraft occupants or persons on the ground and/or the accident involved hull loss or serious damage to the aircraft or airport and/or the accident invoked a change in procedures, regulations or process that had a wide effect on other airports or airlines or the aircraft industry). Now the only one it sort of fits into is the second category, though there wasn't a hull loss. I don't think the gap between the two incidents is really a reason for it to be included. Especially because this one doesn't seem as relevant as the ones surrounding it. NcSchu(Talk) 15:34, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] BOAC Flight 712

Thanks for the note, didnt feel strongly enough to delete the names but it is likely to be challenged as WP:NOTMEMORIAL at some point in the future! MilborneOne (talk) 16:21, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Geotags

[edit] Geo Links and Geograph

There are problems with your suggestion- which is the reason I haven't done it. There is a discussion forum Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates that is discussing the whole thing. The crux is that many people are unhappy if the link goes to one site, no matter how useful, and believes that the link should only go to GeoHack, where the reader can choose the map they want. There are a lot of unhappy people there. I have a problem with the way we are doing the conversion. It looks great, but if we edit either gridref or the location then the other doesn't change. In looking for a solution, I have been looking at the maths and a lot doesn't add up, this coupled with the volatility of forum, I have been hanging back. ClemRutter (talk) 18:32, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello there, and thanks for the contact. To me this looks good, but (and it is a big but) I'm afraid the issue appears more complex and contentious than I had first anticipated. I'm also not particularly "clued-up" about which system is good and which is bad, which seems to be part of an ongoing debate. All I know is that there should be a standard system, and these should be included as part of the text for settlements in the UK. Have you taken this to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates? -- Jza84 · (talk) 23:15, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Checking inline geotags

  • Now the accuracy of OStoWiki has been corrected (+/- 2m) all previous references may need tweaking.
  • The GeoHack tool now has a new interface and at the bottom of the GB section, under the dangerously inaccurate grid reference is a fantastic tool called Map of all Coordinates in article.
  • I tried it on the Loose stream, and because of it I I'm going to make another tweak to OStoWiki.

Thanks for your comment at Talk:Wormshill; would love to know more. Please add anything you can on the former mills although please do check we're talking about the same area! Many thanks Dick G (talk) 22:55, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Great, thanks for adding that in. Please don't be offended if I tinker with the sentence style a bit, just want to make sure it fits with the rest of the piece. The name "Beddington" is baffling though. I don't doubt the book is right - it's a windy part of Kent after all! However the 1871 OS which I have shows "Bedmanton" and I can't seem to see any mills on it - appreciate that's 50 years later and a lot could happen in the time. Any chance you could email me a scan of the OS map you have? Would love to see an even earlier map of the area for general research. Cheers Dick G (talk) 00:07, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Michael - just a couple of coments about dates on post mills as in your recent changes to the Post Mills article - The 1627 date at Pitstone is a fake, it's actually 1697 (It was modified by Stanley Freese during his feud with Rex Wailes). The Great Gransden date is dubious as a date for the mill as a whole. Drinkstone's principle frame timbers have been dendro-dated to 1586 which makes it, at present, the earliest reliably dated post mill in England. [edit] Re: St. Martin's Windmill

Generally it is accept that the article should be at the place name without any qualifiers (a.k.a. Canterbury) unless there is already an article at said title. If articles are created about the other St. Martin's Windmills, the article can be moved to St. Martin's Mill (Canterbury) and a disambiguation page can be create to link to the other articles. Cheers! Redfarmer (talk) 12:09, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

What I would recommend you do before you create a lot of articles at the format you propose is create a new naming convention proposal at WP:NAME. This would be the fastest and best way to ensure that there is a consensus for your naming format. I dare say that if you keep creating articles under the format you are, they are likely to be moved by those like me who are not a member of your Wikiproject. With that said, I'm not an admin so I don't have the ability to move articles back anyway. As I've said, though, I strongly suggest you attempt to gauge community wide consensus on this issue before you create a lot of articles under such names as it would not be uncontroversial. Its a big improvement. One minor issue in that the manual of style says years WP:MOS are only wikilinked if you have the full date. [edit] Windmills and Gender (in reference to "New Mill, Cross in Hand" article

I posted the debate to the discussion page. I looked in to it briefly. Although referring to ships in the feminine is seemingly accepted on wikipedia (i.e. with the HMS Victory), the list of windmills refers to windmills as genderless in all of the articles I looked at (about a dozen). There may be something to your point that it is considered acceptable by some to refer to windmills in the feminine, however it seems to be the standard in articles you have not authored/edited to refer to them as "it". Perhaps settling on a standard and conforming to it is more important so as to give wikipedia a more consistent and professional feel. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.240.227.56 (talk) 03:11, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

There's no legitimate reason you can't create a WikiProject Mills if you can gather enough interest. – ClockworkSoul 14:17, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm glad to hear it. It seems you have quite a few people who would be more interested in a Mills projects than a Windmills project. – ClockworkSoul 14:25, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I discovered this thread in a roundabout way. One of my interests is Gunpowder and until (say) about WW II Gunpowder was always made by water-powered mills. So I have an interest. There are a few articles that could be expanded to include more of the water-power aspects, in particular: Ballincollig Royal Gunpowder Mills, Eleutherian Mills, Faversham explosives industry, Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills, and a stub at Pontneathvaughan; and there are more articles that could be written. I'm working my way through all of them, but the water-power aspects has not always been emphasised as much s it could be.Pyrotec (talk) 16:37, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] London Windmills

Categories tend to use current subdivisions, so articles in Category:Buildings and structures in London and even Category:Former buildings and structures of London use the current boundaries, not ancient ones. Mills that are no longer working are often still open as museums in the here and now, so should be unambiguously categorised by current location. Perhaps a category scheme based around operational dates could be included as well as the location categories? MRSCTalk 08:17, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I am sure we can work out something that will work. This affects a range of historic buildings and structures, which may have been operational in one era and remain, perhaps converted for some other use. The approach should be consistent across all these types. In this context, I'm not seeing windmills as a special case. MRSCTalk 08:44, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Mill images

Fair use is independent of the licensing conditions on the site- the whole point of fair use (when used correctly, obviously) is that you may use copyrighted material without consent of the owner. However, I agree that there are a few issues with those images (they're too big, for a start) and as you tagged them, I'll delete under G7- author's request. J Milburn (talk) 17:13, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

(Sorry, didn't see your message about putting the comment in the correct place.) Well, as I say, if they are genuinely under fair use, we can use them without paying in legal terms, but I would imagine that they would want to protect their assets if the images have that much commercial value, and may potentially play hell, so finding slightly friendlier images is probably in our best interests! [edit] Chemin de Fer du Cambrésis

I have found a time table of the Chemin de Fer du Cambrésis from 1914 and so now I think I have all the stations, including the situation in Saint-Aubert. I have found a couple of new stations such as Le Jeune-Bois. Only point missing is the industrial branches (no passenger service), in various document I have found that there were some in Catillon, in Lesdins, in Caudry (branch called "La Folie") etc. So the plan is ok for passenger service but incomplete for freight. Hektor (talk) 14:43, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the Barnstar. This is my first one, I really appreciate. I will now update the French language article. I have seen that you have added back Lourches. I can confirm that there is no Lourches station in the 1914 timetable I got, only Vieux-Lourches. Hektor (talk) 17:24, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Well. Digging deeper, I have now two time tables, one dated May 1914 and the other one June 1958. Neither of both has a Lourches station, both of them have a Vieux-Lourches station. The only difference between both tables, between Denain and Caudry, is that the three Saint-Aubert stations are down to just one. Remarkably consistent over 44 years. Mike I feel quite pleased with myself! I had found the relatively new Geobox|rivers at River Trent and investigated. You will now see the result at this article (I took an easy one first!). There may well be other information - I couldn't work out the coordinates, and in any case a river covers more than one; couldn't find the exact length; and dunno if there is anywhere to be able to get flow rates etc. You may well be able to add more tributaries - I took the ones you had alraedy mentioned under the mills. None of the blanks come out until you give some information. I had also discovered the exact location of the source - a historical document on the Medway; I'm sure you also know more about its course, although perhaps that isn't too important. [edit] Photo

Unfortunately, we are restricted to just one photo. I just hadn't cleaned up yet :) Gatoclass (talk) 11:59, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to disappoint. We have lots of nice photo hooks ATM, they can't all be featured. Gatoclass (talk) 12:02, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Make a suggestion on the DYK talk page. But I doubt your chances, I tried to do two images one other time and it was explained to me that we can't do that.
Since you weren't happy not to get your article featured though, I decided to throw it back and replace with another one. Maybe someone will feature your article next time, it is a nice long one and good enough for the No. 1 spot I think. Gatoclass (talk) 12:16, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
