Miyakojima (宮古島市 -shi Miyako: Myāku Okinawan: Nāku) is a city on several islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. It was formed on October 1, 2005, when the city of Hirara, the towns of Irabu, Gusukube, and Shimoji, and the village of Ueno merged. The towns and the village were in Miyako District, which as a result of the merger has one remaining village. Miyakojima has an area of 204.54 km² and, as of January 1 2008, a population of 52,777, and a population density of 258 per km².
